Description
Yûto is a character from the first story in the anthology anime Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26, an adaptation titled "A Couple Clucking Chickens Were Still Kickin' in the Schoolyard". He is one of the alien beings who have invaded and conquered Earth, leading to the near-extinction of humanity, which they now view and treat as livestock. Initially, Yûto behaves just like his fellow aliens, and it is revealed that he personally killed all of Ami's classmates while they were practicing for a school play. However, unlike his comrades, Yûto develops a different mindset, beginning to question the morality of devouring humans. This internal conflict drives him to change his actions. Instead of killing the lone survivor, Ami, he knocks her unconscious. He then transforms into a human disguise and later lives alongside her, hiding together in a schoolyard while wearing chicken helmets to pose as the animals and avoid detection by other aliens.
In terms of personality, Yûto first presents as cold and murderous, as is typical of his species. But his character is defined by a philosophical turn that leads him to protect a human. This protective instinct is complex; in a moment of desperation to save her, he even pretends to revert to his predatory nature, intimidating Ami by claiming he will eat her after all. This act is a deception meant to scare her away for her own safety, as he prepares to fight a vastly more powerful alien "policeman" who arrives to exterminate them. His motivation ultimately shifts from consumption to a self-sacrificial form of guardianship, allowing Ami a small amount of extra time and the comfort of being in the company of another being during the final moments of her world.
Yûto's key relationship is with Ami, the last human girl he is sworn to protect. He also has a notable, though indirect, connection to another alien named Yohei, who feeds the disguised pair and eventually discovers their secret. Yohei tries to help them but is quickly killed by the alien policeman, a massive blue creature that serves as the story's final antagonist. Yûto's role in the story is that of a tragic protector. The narrative follows his transition from predator to guardian, culminating in his final stand against a superior enemy. His development is encapsulated in his decision to fight and his final transformation into a muscular, towering dark-colored beast to battle the policeman, a scene noted for its intensity. The story leaves his ultimate fate ambiguous, with the conclusion of his fight left for the audience to assume, though some sources suggest he perishes in the effort. His notable ability is transformation; he can shift from his original form of a pale, bald humanoid with glowing red eyes and a small horn, into a human with beige skin, and finally into a powerful, imposing beast for combat.
