Description
Yōhei is a character from the first episode of the anime anthology Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26, which adapts the short story A Couple Clucking Chickens Were Still Kickin’ in the Schoolyard. He is an alien high school student living on Earth at a time when his species has conquered the planet and now views humans as livestock. Yōhei is depicted as a kind-hearted individual who possesses a strong sense of empathy, a trait that sets him apart from his peers. His personality is defined by his quiet contemplation and his willingness to question the cruel norms of his society.

Unlike most aliens who either ignore or actively participate in the subjugation of humanity, Yōhei is disturbed by the casual treatment of humans as food. His primary motivation is his moral opposition to senseless slaughter. When he discovers two human survivors, Yuto and Ami, who are disguised as chickens in the schoolyard, he does not report them. Instead, he chooses to protect them, driven by a belief that their lives have value.

Within the story's narrative, Yōhei acts as a crucial ally to the human protagonists. His role is that of a protector and a bridge between two worlds, offering a glimmer of hope in a dystopian setting. He uses his knowledge of the alien students to hide Yuto and Ami and devises a plan to help them escape to a safe zone in the mountains. His defiance puts him into direct conflict with the other alien characters, particularly a new transfer student named Masatoshi Endo, who comes from a planet where chickens are a delicacy and is eager to eat the disguised humans.

The key relationships Yōhei has are with the two humans he saves. He shows particular care for Ami, promising to protect her. He also interacts with his alien classmates, including a large girl named Moemi, but his bond is primarily with the humans he has chosen to help. A significant relationship is with the authority figures of his own society; his act of compassion is ultimately cut short when the alien police, representing the brutal laws of their world, kill him for his transgression.

Yōhei’s character arc, though brief, is one of tragic conviction. He begins as a student going about his day, but upon discovering the humans, he makes a conscious choice to defy his species. His development is shown through his decisive action and his final moments, where he sacrifices himself in an attempt to allow Ami to escape. His death serves as a pivotal, heartbreaking moment in the episode, underscoring the story’s themes of the futility and cost of resistance in an uncaring world. He does not possess any superhuman abilities beyond the physical characteristics of his alien species, and his heroism is defined by his empathy and moral courage rather than any special power. The Japanese voice actor for Yōhei is Kazuki Ura.
