Description
Ryomen Sukuna is a central antagonist and an immensely powerful figure in his narrative, known by the epithet the King of Curses. His origins trace back over a thousand years to the Heian era, regarded as the golden age of jujutsu sorcery. During this time, Sukuna was a human sorcerer, but his overwhelming and malevolent power set him apart, making him less a sorcerer and more of a walking disaster in the eyes of others. After his death, his immense power was sealed within twenty mummified fingers, which were scattered across Japan as indestructible cursed objects.
Sukuna's personality is defined by his profound cruelty, cold-heartedness, and supreme arrogance. He is a narcissist who acts solely according to his own whims and desires, showing no regard for the lives of humans or cursed spirits. He takes particular pleasure in killing women and children, and he frequently mocks and revels in the despair of others. Despite his brutality, he is not without a degree of intelligence and strategic cunning, capable of manipulation and forming binding vows to achieve his ends. He intensely dislikes anyone who overestimates their own abilities or attempts to command him, as he believes no one is qualified to give him orders unless he is willing. His primary motivation is the pursuit of his own pleasure and freedom. He despises being bound by anyone or anything and seeks to live according to his own will. He also holds a strong interest in Megumi Fushiguro, which later becomes a key part of his plan to gain greater freedom.
In the story, Sukuna exists as a parasitic presence within the body of the protagonist, Yuji Itadori, after Yuji consumes one of his fingers. Because of the immense danger Sukuna poses, Yuji is sentenced to a secret execution by the jujutsu authorities, a sentence that is only stayed by the patronage of the powerful sorcerer Satoru Gojo. Sukuna's relationship with Yuji is purely antagonistic; he views Yuji as a temporary vessel and frequently attempts to break his spirit or make his life difficult. He forms a binding vow with Yuji, granting himself one minute of control over their shared body in exchange for a promise not to harm anyone during that time, a pact he later exploits. His key relationship is with Megumi Fushiguro, in whom he takes a deep and unexplained interest, ultimately seeking to usurp his body as a new vessel. He is also served by Uraume, a loyal subordinate from his past life.
Throughout the series, Sukuna's role evolves from a sealed threat to an active and catastrophic force. Initially suppressed by Yuji, he gains more influence as his vessel consumes more of his fingers. During the Shibuya Incident, he is temporarily revived with a significant amount of his power, causing widespread destruction and slaughter. Later, during the Culling Games, he exploits the binding vow with Yuji to take control and force Megumi to ingest one of his fingers, successfully transferring his soul into Megumi's body and permanently incarnating himself in the modern world. This act demonstrates his long-term strategic thinking and his complete lack of moral consideration for anyone else.
Sukuna possesses an arsenal of formidable abilities. His primary cursed technique, often referred to as Shrine, involves two types of slashing attacks. Dismantle is a standard slash used against inanimate objects and non-cursed targets, while Cleave is a more powerful slash that adjusts its lethality based on the target's cursed energy and overall toughness to ensure a single fatal cut. His Domain Expansion, Malevolent Shrine, is unique and exceptionally powerful as it does not require a closed barrier, instead manifesting directly onto the real world with a maximum effective radius of 200 meters. Within this domain, everything possessing cursed energy is continuously and relentlessly slashed apart. Sukuna is also a master of Reverse Cursed Technique, allowing him to heal his own body, and he has demonstrated the ability to wield powerful flame-based attacks as well. Through his transfer into Megumi's body, he also gains access to the Ten Shadows Technique, further expanding his already devastating capabilities.
