Description
Ryomen Sukuna is a central antagonist in the series, known as the King of Curses. He was the most powerful jujutsu sorcerer during the Heian Era, over a thousand years ago, a period regarded as the golden age of jujutsu. During his lifetime, he was not a cursed spirit but a human sorcerer whose immense power and evil nature were so feared that he was dubbed the King of Curses. Upon his death, his power was sealed into twenty indestructible, mummified fingers, which are designated as Special Grade cursed objects. These fingers remain scattered across Japan, and anyone who consumes one becomes a vessel for Sukuna's consciousness.
Sukuna is defined by a personality of absolute cruelty, narcissism, and supreme arrogance. He holds no moral compass and operates solely on his own whims and desires, showing no regard for human life. He derives pleasure from causing suffering and psychological torment, particularly for his vessel, Yuji Itadori. Despite his malevolence, he is not purely chaotic; he displays a keen interest in powerful and skilled opponents, showing a twisted form of respect for those who can challenge him. He possesses a vast intellect and a deep, instinctive understanding of jujutsu, allowing him to analyze and counter complex techniques with ease.
Sukuna's primary motivation is his own amusement and the pursuit of his own strength. While he initially seeks to gain complete control over his vessel to reincarnate fully, his broader goals are more abstract, rooted in a desire to assert his dominance and live according to his own hedonistic and violent nature. He is not driven by a desire to reshape the world but rather to experience it on his own terms, crushing any who oppose him.
In the story, Sukuna serves as the ultimate threat and a constant source of conflict. His presence within Yuji Itadori is the reason for the protagonist's suspended death sentence, framing the entire narrative. Throughout the series, he is a ticking time bomb, occasionally seizing control to unleash devastating power, most notably during the Shibuya Incident, where his rampage causes catastrophic destruction and loss of life. He plays a pivotal role in the Culling Games, where he betrays Yuji by transferring his soul to Megumi Fushiguro's body through a binding vow. This act allows him to fully incarnate and achieve a near-complete resurrection, using Megumi's body as his new vessel.
Sukuna's key relationships are defined by his self-serving nature. His relationship with Yuji Itadori is purely antagonistic, as Yuji acts as his unwilling prison. Sukuna takes pleasure in Yuji's suffering and makes a binding vow with him to take control for one minute without harming anyone, a promise he later exploits through a technical loophole. He develops a particular and enigmatic interest in Megumi Fushiguro, recognizing the latent potential of his Ten Shadows Technique. His actions are consistently aimed at breaking Megumi's spirit to maintain control over his body. Uraume is his loyal and long-serving subordinate, a figure from his Heian Era past who assists in his plans for resurrection. He also has a complex connection to Kenjaku, the ancient sorcerer who orchestrated the modern chaos and the creation of Yuji Itadori.
Throughout the narrative, Sukuna's development is tied to his gradual return to power. Initially confined to Yuji's body with only a fraction of his original strength, he grows more formidable as he consumes more of his fingers. His strategic transfer to Megumi Fushiguro represents a major evolution, granting him access to the powerful Ten Shadows Technique and allowing him to fight at a level closer to his original power. In his final battles, he is forced to assume his original Heian Era form, a massive figure with four arms and two faces, representing the peak of his jujutsu mastery and physical prowess.
Sukuna possesses a range of overwhelming abilities. His cursed technique, simply known as Shrine, primarily allows him to launch invisible, lethal slashes. Dismantle is a standard slash used against inanimate objects and most opponents, while Cleave is a more powerful slash that automatically adjusts its strength and toughness based on the target's level of cursed energy. He can also unleash a powerful flame arrow technique, called Fuga or Divine Flame, which is capable of incinerating even the most resilient foes. His domain expansion is the Malevolent Shrine, an extraordinarily refined and devastating technique. Unlike most domains, it is constructed without a barrier, appearing as an open, two-hundred-meter-radius structure. Within this range, his slashing attacks are guaranteed to hit everything that possesses cursed energy. He is also a master of Reverse Cursed Technique, allowing him to heal his own body at an astonishing rate, regenerating limbs and fatal wounds almost instantly. After taking over Megumi Fushiguro, he also gains access to the Ten Shadows Technique, a powerful inherited technique that allows him to summon and command ten different shikigami, including the immensely powerful Mahoraga. His combat prowess is further enhanced by his Heian Era body, whose four arms and two mouths allow him to perform hand signs and chant continuously while fighting, giving him a decisive advantage in battle.
