Description
The Bat Devil is a recurring antagonist in Chainsaw Man, first appearing in the Bat Devil arc of the story's first part. As a devil, its power is derived from the fear of bats. Its original form is that of an enormous, muscular humanoid bat with a white mane of hair around its head, large round eyes, and a mouth filled with multiple sharp teeth. Its arms are connected to its torso by flaps of skin that function as wings. When first introduced, the Bat Devil is missing an arm, an injury it sustained in a prior encounter with humans that forced it into hiding. It later regrows this limb after consuming Denji's blood.
The personality of the Bat Devil in its first incarnation is marked by a profound hatred for humanity, primarily because of the injuries they inflicted upon it. It is an arrogant and cruel creature with a disturbingly refined sense of taste, viewing human beings not simply as food but as a variety of dishes to be enjoyed. It notably expresses a preference for eating children and categorizes its potential meals with a twisted sense of gourmet appreciation, dismissing Denji and Power's blood as disgusting. Despite its malice towards humans, it demonstrates a capacity for affection with other devils, maintaining a relationship with the Leech Devil who later mourns its death.
The Bat Devil's primary motivation is to heal itself and then indulge its appetite for human flesh. To achieve this, it resorts to manipulation and hostage-taking. It captures Meowy, the pet cat of the Fiend Power, and holds the animal hostage to coerce Power into bringing it a human to consume. Power brings Denji, who is knocked unconscious and offered up. After drinking Denji's blood and regenerating its arm, the Bat Devil reveals its treacherous nature by breaking its agreement with Power, swallowing Meowy whole, and then consuming Power as well. It then attempts to fly into the city to continue its rampage.
In its role within the story, the Bat Devil serves as the central threat of the early Bat Devil arc, forcing an uneasy alliance between Denji and Power. Its actions lead to a direct confrontation with Denji, who transforms into Chainsaw Man to save Power and her cat. The ensuing battle is brutal, with the Bat Devil using its immense strength to throw cars and even utilizing a powerful mouth cannon that fires an explosive blast of air pressure. Despite these abilities, Denji ultimately overcomes and kills the Bat Devil. Its death is immediately followed by the arrival of its partner, the Leech Devil, seeking revenge.
After being killed, the Bat Devil reincarnates and returns to Earth in a later arc. This second incarnation is significantly different from the first. Its appearance is more grotesque, with parts of its body having exposed flesh, large bulging eyes, and unbalanced teeth. Its personality is also drastically altered; it has lost nearly all of its intelligence and the ability to speak. In this state, it behaves as a feral, savage monster acting purely on instinct, rampaging through the city and indiscriminately devouring people. It encounters the characters Asa Mitaka and Yuko, but before it can properly attack them, it is instantly killed by the Cockroach Devil, which was thrown into a building by Denji during another fight.
The Bat Devil possesses several notable abilities that make it a formidable opponent. It has enhanced strength, able to effortlessly punch through building ceilings and throw cars with a single arm. It also has enhanced durability, surviving falls from great heights and being thrown through walls. Its bat wings allow it to fly at high speeds despite its enormous size. A unique and powerful ability is its mouth cannon, where it compresses its mouth into the shape of a gun barrel to fire a devastating blast of compressed air capable of demolishing buildings. As a devil, it can also restore its health and even regrow lost limbs by consuming blood. Following its reincarnation, the Bat Devil is considerably weaker and loses most of these unique abilities, including the use of the mouth cannon and its power of speech.
