Description
Denji is the central protagonist of the story. He begins as a young man trapped in a life of extreme poverty, having inherited his late father's debt to the yakuza. To survive and repay this debt, he works as a freelance devil hunter, aided only by his devil companion, Pochita, who takes the form of a small, dog-like creature with chainsaw-like appendages.
Denji's personality is heavily shaped by a lifetime of deprivation and isolation. Uneducated and socially inept, he lacks basic manners and formal knowledge, but this upbringing has also given him a raw, pragmatic, and surprisingly empathetic understanding of suffering. He is often loud, impulsive, and driven by the most basic of human desires, such as the simple pleasure of eating a jam-covered slice of bread or the physical intimacy of touching a woman's chest. These goals are a stark contrast to the lofty ambitions of typical heroes, but they stem from a genuine place of having been denied even the smallest comforts. Despite his crass and short-tempered exterior, he possesses a deep well of loyalty and empathy, which allows him to form strong bonds with those who show him genuine kindness.
His primary motivation shifts as the story progresses. Initially, he is driven by a desperate need to escape poverty and experience simple physical pleasures. After being recruited by the government, his primary goal becomes the seemingly simple one of living a comfortable life with three meals a day and the chance to have a girlfriend. This is manipulated by Makima, a high-ranking Public Safety Devil Hunter who promises to grant him any wish if he kills the Gun Devil, a legendary and immensely powerful devil responsible for countless deaths. As Denji experiences genuine relationships, his motivations evolve to include protecting the people he cares about, ultimately leading him to fight for a sense of normalcy and belonging.
In the story, Denji serves as the primary instrument of force for Public Safety's Special Division 4, tasked with hunting dangerous devils. His role quickly evolves from a simple pawn to the central figure around whom the battle for the Gun Devil revolves. He is a devil-human hybrid, transformed when his dying friend Pochita became his heart in a contract. By pulling a cord on his chest, Denji transforms into the Chainsaw Man, with chainsaws sprouting from his head and arms.
His most significant relationships define his journey. The foundational relationship is with Pochita, his only friend and family in his early life. Their contract is born of mutual love and sacrifice, with Pochita's dying wish being to see Denji live his dreams. He then becomes fixated on Makima, the first person to show him kindness and affection, though this relationship is ultimately a manipulative and tragic betrayal. He forms a chaotic but deep sibling-like bond with Power, a fiend he lives with, and a rivalrous friendship with his stoic partner, Aki Hayakawa. These two become his first true family, and their fates are the primary catalysts for his major character development.
Denji undergoes significant development from a simple-minded boy driven by hunger and lust to a person who understands profound loss, betrayal, and the true meaning of love and family. The crushing of his naive dreams forces him to grow beyond his simple desires, culminating in him making a difficult choice to defeat Makima not through brute strength alone, but through a grim understanding of her contract. By the end of the first part, he has assumed the responsibility of caring for Nayuta, the reincarnation of the Control Devil, accepting his role not as a hero but as someone who will protect the innocent.
Denji possesses several notable abilities as a devil-human hybrid. His primary power is transforming into Chainsaw Man, which grants him superhuman strength, speed, and durability. He possesses a powerful regenerative ability that allows him to heal from most wounds, including the reattachment of limbs, as long as he has enough blood to consume. His main weapons are the razor-sharp chainsaws on his head and arms, which he can also use to extend chains to grapple or ensnare enemies. As the host of the Chainsaw Devil, he also possesses a terrifying and unique power: any devil he consumes is erased from existence, along with the very concept that devil represented. This makes him a being feared even by other devils.
