Description
Hōsen, known as the "Night King," is a formidable antagonist and the tyrannical ruler of the underground red-light district Yoshiwara. He is a member of the Yato Clan, a race renowned for its immense physical strength and ferocious combat prowess. In the past, Hōsen held the position of leader of the Seventh Division of the Harusame, a powerful and expansive space pirate syndicate. His fearsome reputation is such that he was once able to fight Umibouzu, the strongest warrior of the Yato and father to Kagura and Kamui, for three days without a decisive victor.

As the ruler of Yoshiwara, Hōsen governs the sealed city with an iron fist, enforcing his will through brutal authority. He has grown ancient and bitter, having sealed himself away from the sun along with the district, which is built in a massive underground cavern. His personality is defined by his cruelty, his obsession with possession, and a deep-seated despair. His primary motivation is his fixation on Hinowa, the radiant and benevolent top courtesan of Yoshiwara. Unable to possess her love, he keeps her imprisoned within the district, using her as a symbol to remind himself and others that he holds the sun itself captive in his world of eternal night.

In the story, Hōsen serves as the central antagonist of the Yoshiwara arc, which the film adapts. He is the primary obstacle that the protagonist, Gintoki Sakata, and his allies must overcome to liberate Yoshiwara from his oppressive rule. His role is that of the ultimate tyrant whose defeat is necessary for the freedom of Hinowa, the courtesan Seita, and the guardian Tsukuyo.

Hōsen has several key relationships that define his role. His former protégé is Kamui, Kagura's older brother, who trained under Hōsen and later succeeded him as the leader of the Harusame's Seventh Division. This connection brings Kamui to Yoshiwara and sets the stage for a conflict involving the powerful Yato bloodline. His relationship with Tsukuyo is that of a master to an enforcer; she serves as the leader of the Hyakka, his personal guard, before rebelling against him to protect Hinowa and the people of Yoshiwara. His fixation on Hinowa is not born of love but of a possessive desire to own and control the one thing that represents hope and light in his dark existence.

Hōsen experiences little character development in the traditional sense, as he is an established, static tyrant. His role is to be the immovable force of darkness and oppression. His defeat serves as a catalyst for the development of other characters, such as Tsukuyo, who finds freedom from her master, and Kamui, whose path is further illuminated in contrast to Hōsen's ultimate stagnation.

Regarding his abilities, as a member of the Yato Clan, Hōsen possesses superhuman strength, speed, endurance, and durability that far exceed those of a normal human. He is an exceptionally skilled and experienced warrior, having risen to a high rank within the Harusame. His most notable feat of strength is fighting Umibouzu to a standstill for three days. In combat, he wields a large metal pipe as a weapon, which he uses with devastating force. Furthermore, as a being of the night who has rejected the sun for decades, his body has adapted to darkness, and exposure to sunlight, while he is able to withstand it, is a profound psychological weakness.
