Description
Sōgo Okita is the captain of the first division of the Shinsengumi, the armed police force of Edo. In Shin-Gekijōban Gintama: Yoshiwara Daienjō, he is a member of a Shinsengumi team that includes commander Isao Kondō and vice-commander Toshirō Hijikata, who are investigating a case that leads them into the underground entertainment district of Yoshiwara. While the original telling of the Yoshiwara story did not feature the Shinsengumi, this film adaptation expands their role, giving them a more active part in the events.

He is a young man with light chestnut-colored hair and sharp eyes, typically wearing the standard black and gold uniform of a Shinsengumi captain. His outward appearance is often described as refreshing or handsome, which sharply contrasts with his inner personality. Sōgo is infamous for his extremely sadistic nature, a trait that he frequently indulges, often at the expense of his colleagues and enemies alike. Despite this, he is widely recognized as the strongest and most skilled swordsman in the entire Shinsengumi.

In the film, his role involves joining the rest of his team in infiltrating the criminal underworld of Yoshiwara. As part of this investigation, he and the other members of the Shinsengumi adopt various disguises to blend in. Sōgo, in particular, is shown in the guise of a ganguro gal, a transformation that underscores the film's characteristic blend of serious action and absurdist comedy.

His key relationships are primarily defined by his interactions with his fellow Shinsengumi officers. He holds a deep and genuine respect for Isao Kondō, the局长, who he views as a mentor and father figure. Conversely, his relationship with vice-commander Toshirō Hijikata is one of intense, albeit often comedic, antagonism. Sōgo constantly schemes to harm, humiliate, or even kill Hijikata, frequently using a bazooka or other underhanded tactics, all while maintaining a deceptively innocent demeanor. This behavior stems from a complex mix of rivalry and resentment, as he blames Hijikata for rejecting his beloved elder sister, Mitsuba. Despite this, he begrudgingly counts Hijikata among his few friends. His relationship with the young alien hunter Kagura is also marked by mutual rivalry and constant brawling, with each considering the other a worthy opponent.

The character's development in this film is tied to his role as a member of the Shinsengumi. While the core narrative focuses on the bond between a boy named Seita and the courtesan Hinowa, Sōgo's presence reinforces the Shinsengumi's function as protectors of public order, even in lawless places like Yoshiwara. His actions demonstrate a loyalty not just to his comrades, but also to a sense of duty, showcasing that beneath his sadistic and lazy exterior lies a capable and dedicated officer.

In terms of notable abilities, Sōgo is a combat genius. While he is a master of swordsmanship, wielding his sword the Kikuichimonji RX-78, he is also pragmatic and frequently employs firearms and artillery, such as a bazooka, to great effect. He possesses a calm and analytical mind in battle, allowing him to adapt to situations quickly and make effective use of psychological warfare against his opponents.
