Description
Kamui is a significant character and a member of the Yato Tribe, a race known for its immense physical prowess. He holds the roles of eldest son of Umibouzu, elder brother to Kagura, and for a time, serves as a major antagonist before his complex loyalties come into focus. His early life is marked by a stark contrast to his later self. As a child on his home planet of Rakuyou, Kamui was a caring and responsible boy who took over household duties and cared for his infant sister, Kagura, after their mother, Kouka, fell ill. With his father often away searching for a cure for Kouka, Kamui felt a deep responsibility to protect his family. He frequently clashed with residents who bullied him, but was scolded by his father for using his Yato strength, as it amounted to bullying the weak. As his mother's health continued to decline and his family structure strained, a young Kamui began to obsess over the meaning of strength, eventually seeking to revive the abandoned Yato tradition of proving one's power by killing a parent. He attempted to murder his father, resulting in Umibouzu losing an arm but ultimately being defeated. After this failed patricide, Kamui left his family, becoming a pupil of the powerful Housen and later rising to become the captain of the Harusame's 7th division and eventually an admiral.

Driven by the loss of his mother and his perceived powerlessness, Kamui develops a philosophy that emotional bonds are a fatal weakness. He believes that if one cannot protect their loved ones, they should never have formed attachments in the first place, a rule he follows by distancing himself from his own family. True to his Yato heritage, he is a battle-loving individual who is always eager to test his strength against powerful opponents. He displays a pronounced sadistic streak during combat, always wearing a smile which he considers a form of respect for a worthy adversary. Despite his cruel tendencies, he has a personal code, stating he dislikes killing women because they can potentially give birth to strong children, and he does not target children. He has a voracious appetite, a trait he shares with his younger sister. His mentor Housen describes him as ignorant, too young and hot-blooded to understand why powerful warriors like himself and Umibouzu eventually chose to settle down, a concept Kamui rejects as he believes a Yato must always be on the battlefield.

Kamui’s primary motivation is the pursuit of strength above all else. His entire ideology is a defense mechanism born from the trauma of his mother's death and his self-hatred for being unable to save her. By believing that strength is the only truth and that family is a shackle, he buries his grief and finds a singular, destructive purpose in surpassing his father and becoming the strongest warrior in the universe.

His relationships are defined by his toxic family history. He holds his father, Umibouzu, responsible for their mother's death and seeks to kill him to prove his own power. His relationship with his sister, Kagura, is complex; while he initially sees her as a weakling and claims to have no interest in her, his actions betray a lingering care. He passes up multiple opportunities to kill her, saves her life on at least one occasion, and shows concern that fighting her might destroy her new home. It is later revealed that he avoided confronting Kagura because she resembles their mother too closely. Abuto is Kamui's most trusted and powerful subordinate and serves as a rare confidant and voice of reason, often trying to curb his commander's more reckless impulses. Kamui forms a significant alliance with the samurai Takasugi Shinsuke. Initially enemies who wished to fight to the death, they become allies after Takasugi saves Kamui from execution, with Kamui deciding to postpone their duel to join forces in a plot against Earth.

Over the course of the story, Kamui undergoes significant development. The carefully constructed walls he built around himself begin to crumble during and after the battle on Rakuyou. His fight against Kagura, Gintoki, and his father forces him to finally confront the pain of his past and what he has become. He begins to reconcile with his family, showing clear hesitation before attacking his sister and being accused by Abuto of "running away from the pain of being punched by his dad and for punching his little sister." By the end, he is able to bury his hatred, acknowledging his sister's strength and re-establishing a tense but genuine bond with his family.

As a member of the elite Yato Tribe, Kamui is one of the physically strongest beings in the universe, considered to be on par with legends like Housen and Umibouzu. His strength is immense, demonstrated by his ability to destroy a spaceship with a single kick and easily penetrate an opponent's body with his bare hand. He possesses tremendous endurance, able to withstand powerful blows from Housen and fight for extended periods even after being injected with a tranquilizer strong enough to fell an elephant. He is not a simple brawler but an expert hand-to-hand combatant who uses acrobatic movements and precise, lethal techniques. He is known as the "lightning spear" of the 7th division, the most potent combat unit of the Harusame space pirate fleet.
