Description
Chibi Mechagodzilla is a robotic kaiju who appears as a primary character in the anime series Chibi Godzilla Raids Again. The character originated from the children's book Sticker Picture Book: Chibi Godzilla and Friends, which featured three distinct Chibi Mechagodzilla brothers distinguished by yellow, red, and blue trim. The yellow-trimmed version is the one who appears as a major character in the anime. This mecha was created by humans for reasons that are not fully explained, but at some point it became stranded on Monster Island. It was discovered washed ashore on a beach, unconscious, and was forcibly awakened when Chibi Godzilla fired his heat ray at it.
In terms of appearance, Chibi Mechagodzilla resembles a mechanized, gray-scaled version of Chibi Godzilla. It has square eyes, two pointy ears, a small bump on its head, and two-pronged clawed hands. The character is genderless but is typically referred to using he/him pronouns by other characters and in episode descriptions.
The personality of Chibi Mechagodzilla is defined by its role as the straight man among the more eccentric inhabitants of Monster Island. It often reacts to the illogical and extraordinary behavior of other characters with confusion, exasperation, or surprise. Despite this tendency toward frustration, especially when dealing with Chibi Godzilla's destructive antics, the mecha has a genuine desire to befriend everyone it encounters. This is shown clearly in its interactions with Chibi Ghidorah, where it asks each head if they can be friends, and with Chibi Mothra, where it persists in speaking to her directly despite interference from the Shobijin. Underneath its sometimes irritable exterior, Chibi Mechagodzilla demonstrates a kind disposition, offering to help Chibi Godzilla achieve his dream of growing large enough to be hugged by his father.
Chibi Mechagodzilla's primary motivation throughout the series is to assist Chibi Godzilla in his goal of becoming a giant monster. Upon learning of this dream, the mecha immediately offers its friendship and declares that it will help in any way it can. The robot also shows a strong interest in understanding the world of Monster Island and its unusual inhabitants, often asking questions and trying to make sense of situations that defy logic.
In the story, Chibi Mechagodzilla serves as a newcomer who allows the audience to discover the quirks of Monster Island alongside it. After awakening, it accompanies Chibi Godzilla on a tour of the island, leading to encounters with various chibi monsters. It attempts to befriend Chibi Ghidorah, whose three heads give conflicting answers to the offer of friendship. It meets Chibi Mothra and tries to compliment her directly, inadvertently causing her to cry and release poisonous scales that incapacitate everyone nearby. When the group climbs a mountain, Chibi Mechagodzilla grows tired of Chibi Rodan's narcissistic bragging about his wings and bluntly calls them plain, causing Rodan to faint from the insult. It also endures Chibi Godzilla's nonsensical monster study sessions, where its serious answers are consistently marked wrong in favor of comedic responses. Later, when Chibi Godzilla, Chibi Ghidorah, and Chibi Anguirus destroy a model city that Chibi Mechagodzilla built, the mecha becomes frustrated and fires its eye beams at them in retaliation.
Key relationships define much of Chibi Mechagodzilla's role in the series. Its most important bond is with Chibi Godzilla, who becomes its first friend on the island and the one it seeks to help. Despite finding Chibi Godzilla's behavior frustrating, the mecha remains loyal and continues to accompany him. Chibi Mechagodzilla also attempts to build friendships with other monsters, including Chibi Ghidorah, who gives it the nickname Mego-yan, and Chibi Mothra, whom it tries to encourage. Later in the series, it is revealed that Chibi Mechagodzilla was originally sent to destroy Monster Island along with Chibi Gigan, adding a layer of complexity to its background and its integration into the island community.
The character possesses several notable abilities. It can project energy beams from its eyes that are powerful enough to knock out Chibi Godzilla, Chibi Ghidorah, and Chibi Anguirus simultaneously. All versions of the Chibi Mechagodzillas are also capable of firing a rainbow-colored laser beam from their mouths. The mecha demonstrates remarkable durability, withstanding Chibi Godzilla's heat ray without damage. This heat ray has been stated to reach at least 180 degrees Celsius, and the robot was constructed using an arc welder, suggesting it can tolerate extremely high temperatures. However, it has a vulnerability to poison-based attacks, as Chibi Mothra's poisonous scales cause it to pass out. The character can also become more powerful when entering a berserk state, as seen when its eyes glow red before and after using its eye beam weapon.
