Description
The Shobijin Older Sister is a tiny, twin fairy character from the anime television series, residing on Monster Island alongside various juvenile kaiju. Her name is Ane, which is derived from the Japanese word for older sister, and she, along with her younger sibling Imo, is known collectively as one of the Shobijin. Hailing from Monster Island, her primary occupation is serving as an interpreter and companion to the shy divine moth, Chibi Mothra, a role she shares with her sister. Later in the series, the pair adopt the stage name Cosmos to pursue a singing career, a direct reference to previous incarnations of the characters.

In sharp contrast to the serene and mystical priestesses seen in other parts of the Godzilla franchise, this version of the Shobijin Older Sister is portrayed as notably vain, bossy, and impertinent. She and her sister are far more assertive than their charge, Chibi Mothra, and frequently take it upon themselves to speak on her behalf. While they act as her psychic interpreters, they often do not seem particularly concerned with accurately conveying Chibi Mothra's true thoughts and feelings. Their personality is not uniform; while they often speak in monotone unison when interacting with others, they are prone to bickering and speaking individually when angered or when alone with Chibi Mothra. The Shobijin can fall out of sync with each other over petty disagreements, such as arguing about shallow qualities they find attractive in others, and typically only regain their synchronization when they channel their shared irritation or anger.

Their primary motivation appears to be a desire to manage and curate the image and social life of their best friend, Chibi Mothra, though their methods are often misguided. For instance, they might take a confrontational and rude tone with another monster to protect Chibi Mothra’s feelings, only to pivot abruptly to trying to set her up on a date if they misinterpret her reaction. Ultimately, their efforts more often than not lead to embarrassing or upsetting the very friend they intend to help. Their role in the story is primarily as comedic foils and agents of chaos in the social dynamics of Monster Island. They are a key part of Chibi Mothra's entourage, and their antics frequently drive the conflict or humor in episodes where they appear. While Chibi Mothra is perfectly capable of speaking for herself, her shy nature means the much more assertive Shobijin have inserted themselves as her necessary interpreters.

The Shobijin Older Sister shares her most significant relationship with her younger twin, Imo. They are a near-inseparable unit, though their dynamic is not always harmonious and can be disrupted by internal conflict. Their entire identity is wrapped up in their relationship with Chibi Mothra, whom they are fiercely protective of in their own peculiar way. They also interact regularly with the other monsters on the island, such as Chibi Godzilla, who is often brutally honest with them, and Chibi Mechagodzilla, with whom they can be either rude or overly eager depending on the situation. In one notable instance, they attempt to translate for Chibi Anguirus, but their translation is self-serving and immediately refuted.

Throughout the series, the Shobijin show a clear development in their pursuits, particularly when they decide to take up singing as the duo Cosmos in the second season. This marks a shift from simply being interpreters to actively pursuing their own artistic ambitions. Their most notable ability is telepathy, which allows them to communicate psychically with each other and with other monsters, especially Chibi Mothra. However, the reliability of this power is questionable, as their "translations" are frequently proven to be either their own thoughts or incorrect guesses, leaving the true extent of their psychic abilities ambiguous. When they are in sync, they are capable of harmonizing and singing together, a talent they leverage in their musical career. When out of sync, however, they even lose the ability to read each other's thoughts.
