Description
Michiru Hazama is a prominent character in the Cardfight!! Vanguard series, known as a legendary fighter whose life revolves entirely around the game. He is a former Under-20 World Champion who broke numerous records as the youngest player to achieve that title, earning global acclaim for his skills. In the narrative, he is one of the finalists in the Deluxe tournament, having secured his spot by winning through the preliminary rounds held in the United States.
Michiru has a distinct and somewhat contradictory personality. In his daily life, he often appears vacant, detached, and airheaded, seeming to live in his own world and rarely going out of his way to interact with others. He can be antisocial and is known to have difficulty with activities outside of playing Vanguard, as well as maintaining a regular lifestyle. This passive demeanor, however, is completely transformed when he engages in a cardfight. Once a match begins, his mind becomes razor-sharp, his insight becomes excellent, and his true nature as a fierce competitor emerges. He craves battles at the highest level that can hone his skills, and his fighting spirit is revealed through his desire to see his opponents souls burn. He also has an eccentric habit of suddenly falling asleep in corners of waiting rooms.
His motivations are deeply tied to his pursuit of the highest peaks of Vanguard. Fighting is his entire life, with all his time and even his dreams being devoted to becoming stronger. This obsession leads him to seek out the strongest opponents and investigate the mysteries behind major tournaments. He becomes intrigued by fighters who can change others, such as Yuyu Kondo, whom he watches closely after seeing how Yuyu influenced his friend Danji. His quest for strength ultimately pushes him to his physical limits. After losing to the tournament organizer Jinki Mukae, Michiru joins the Uniformers organization. He does this not out of malice, but because fighting in virtual space allows him to continue battling without the restrictions of his deteriorating body, though this method carries the risk of eroding his consciousness.
In the story, Michiru serves as a legendary figure and a final boss-level opponent. He is a close friend of Danji Momoyama, whom he asks for help investigating the Deluxe tournament. He also forms a significant rivalry with Kagetsu Yakumo, a prodigy who left the professional circuit after a series of intense clashes with Michiru. His absence from the pro scene fuels Michiru relentless hunt for powerful challengers. Throughout his journey, Michiru develops a relationship with Taizo Kiyokura, transitioning from distant reverence to active dialogue and shared cardfights with him.
Michiru undergoes notable development through his physical and mental struggles. He experiences bouts of harsh, dissonant ringing in his head that cause him physical distress and destabilize his balance. He collapses after a grueling fight and is forced to withdraw from a match due to poor health, requiring hospital treatment. After emerging from a coma, he shows meaningful but gradual steps in opening up his guarded social world.
Michiru possesses several notable abilities that set him apart. He has the unique gift to see the souls of other fighters, which are depicted as colorful, flame-like orbs hovering over a persons heart. This ability expands after his coma, allowing him to perceive these visions in the cards he wields as well, a phenomenon his friend Taizo theorizes may be a form of synesthesia. In combat, he demonstrates excellent insight, able to read the situation coolly and strategize several moves ahead. His playstyle is aggressive and calculated, often seen using his main deck centered around the magic dragon Drajeweled to suppress opponents and cut off their resources early. He is known for using the persona ride chant, Four flames! Illuminate the darkness! Persona Ride. As a participant in the Divinez DELUXE Finals, he stands as one of the eight competitors vying for the title of the strongest Vanguard fighter.
