Katarina, sole daughter of Venice's respected noble Falier family and Yuri's niece, was sent at birth to a countryside villa. There, nursemaid Bona raised her alongside her own baby, Gimo. Katarina formed a deep, sibling-like bond with Gimo and considered Bona family. At age six, after being scolded for calling Bona "mum" and told Sofia was her biological mother, Katarina expressed unfamiliarity with Sofia. This was her final interaction with Bona, who died shortly after from illness.
Following Bona's death, Katarina returned to Venice to live with her parents, Sofia and Marco. She remained unhappy and lonely, suffering psychological neglect, particularly from her father Marco, who saw her as a financial burden. Her uncle Yuri recognized her unhappiness and regularly invited her to his house. There, she channeled her passion for cooking by hosting banquets, finding emotional support through her closeness with Yuri.
Katarina exhibits a cold and rebellious demeanor, consciously rejecting noble etiquette despite knowing the rules. This refusal stems from her deep-seated disdain for the discriminatory practices she believes are embedded in aristocratic manners, unfairly separating nobles from commoners. Underneath this exterior, she possesses a kind and caring nature. Her love for cooking is defining, with panada being her favorite food.
Her consistently poor behavior and etiquette caused numerous hired tutors to resign, overwhelmed by the challenge. Yuri eventually enlisted Arte Spaletti, who was initially brought into the Falier household as a portrait painter, to serve as Katarina's etiquette tutor. Katarina displayed initial unfriendliness toward Arte.
A theory regarding her parentage suggests Yuri might be her biological father. This is supported by her physical resemblance to Yuri—sharing his blonde hair and eye color—unlike Marco. Additionally, Yuri treats her with paternal affection rather than as a niece. The theory is further bolstered by an incident where Daphne witnessed Yuri and Sofia sharing a kiss.
