Description
Rive Shindou is Chrono Shindou's father, Mikuru Shindou's elder brother, and Tokimi Shindou's husband. He possesses distinctive green eyes, dark pale blue spiky hair, and a long scar across the bridge of his nose. Often concealed beneath a desert cloak, he also appears in formal black slacks, a white dress shirt, and a red vest.
Supportive and encouraging, especially towards Shinemon Nitta whom he mentors in cardfighting, Rive nevertheless avoids serious responsibilities and withdraws from difficult situations. Though Shinemon regards him as an exceptional cardfighter, Rive deliberately distances himself from conflicts defending Card Capital to prevent Shinemon's over-reliance.
A decade before Cardfight!! Vanguard G, Rive co-founded FIVA and worked with Ryuzu Myoujin to link Gear Chronicle to Earth. Their research summoned Chrono Dran, but Rive uncovered Ryuzu's plan to sacrifice Planet Cray for Earth. In response, Rive overloaded a portal generator, stole three Depend Cards, and escaped with Chrono Dran and his infant son Chrono. He altered Chrono's memories of the event and went into hiding for their protection. This disappearance led Mikuru and Chrono to believe Ryuzu killed him, resulting in a memorial grave. During concealment, Rive sacrificed part of his lifespan to sustain Chrono Dran, causing progressive physical immobilization.
In cardfights, Rive initially wielded a Tachikaze deck centered on Emperor Dragon, Gaia Emperor as part of Team Nippon with Shin Nitta and Mark Whiting. He later switched to a Nova Grappler deck featuring Fighting Fist Dragon, God Hand Dragon, focusing on amplifying Front Trigger effects and gaining extra drive checks. Under Ryuzu's request, he temporarily used a Gear Chronicle deck before returning to Nova Grappler. His combat record includes victories against Shin Nitta, Nanami Gonomi, Mark Whiting, and Ruga Kaizu, though he later suffered defeats against Ruga and Shinemon.
During the Shinemon arc, Rive worked at Ryuzu's lab. Witnessing Chrono create Chrono Dran's card from a blank Depend Card, he sent Chrono Dran to aid his son. In the arc's conclusion, he entered a portal to Cray to save Chrono, sacrificing himself to prevent Chrono's entrapment. This act stranded Rive on Cray, fulfilling the presumption of his death.
Rive maintained a complex relationship with Ruga Kaizu, shifting from friendship to rivalry. His ability to manipulate memories, like altering Chrono's, parallels PSYqualia users such as Aichi Sendou.
