ONA
Description
Mack is one of the main characters in the anime Exception. He is part of a small team of genetically cloned individuals created by a biological 3D printer called the Womb, selected to be sent to Planet X-10 in order to terraform it and prepare it for human colonization. Mack is portrayed as pragmatic and decisive, often taking a leadership role when difficult choices need to be made. His primary motivation is the successful completion of the mission, and he is willing to take extreme measures to ensure that outcome. When the first printed version of Lewis is deformed by a solar flare and becomes a violent misprint, Mack is the first to advocate for euthanizing the creature and reprinting a proper version of Lewis, viewing it as a necessary act to protect the crew and the mission. This sets him in opposition to Patty, who argues that killing the misprint is murder. Mack’s actions show a strong sense of duty, but also a willingness to resort to deception when he believes it serves the greater good. He secretly tampers with the ship’s drones to prevent evidence of native life on the planet from being transmitted to the Planetary Development Agency, fearing that such information would halt the colonization project. When later accused of stealing the RA bomb, Mack volunteers to have his current iteration destroyed and be reprinted, reasoning that the new version’s behavior will prove his innocence. He engages in direct physical confrontations with both the misprinted Lewis and other threats, demonstrating competence in combat and piloting, notably using an escape pod and later attempting to dismantle the RA bomb. His key relationships include a cooperative but sometimes tense dynamic with Nina, a rivalry with the misprinted Lewis, and an uneasy alliance with the reprinted Lewis. Over the course of the story, Mack’s initial rigidity softens slightly as he comes to accept the complexity of the situation, but he remains fundamentally driven by the mission’s success and his own sense of right and wrong.
