ONA
Description
Gorō-Maru is a samurai who appears in the Onimusha anime series as one of the more skilled men sent to assist Kensuke Matsuki and the legendary swordsman Musashi Miyamoto on a mission to confront the traitor Iemon. He is portrayed as a capable warrior who travels with a pair of falcons named Taromaru and Jiromaru, which he uses to great effect in battle.
In terms of personality, Gorō-Maru demonstrates a mix of worldliness and genuine human fear. He is knowledgeable about the wider world, as shown when he shares various stories about Musashi Miyamoto's legendary duels and his reputation as an undefeated swordsman, showing a degree of admiration for the famous fighter. He can be somewhat skeptical and pragmatic, questioning the accuracy of a companion's fortune-telling by noting the predictions are only right half the time. Despite his skills, he is not portrayed as fearless; when confronted by zombie-like villagers, he is visibly afraid to fight the monsters, requiring encouragement from his ally Heikuro to hold his ground. This fear makes his courageous actions more meaningful, as he continues to fight despite his terror.
His role in the story is that of a supporting warrior and member of Musashi's group. He is initially part of the team assembled under Matsuki, but after Matsuki is revealed as a traitor and killed, Gorō-Maru chooses to remain with Musashi despite being given the chance to leave. He participates in key battles against the demonic forces, notably fighting the zombie villagers and using his falcons to decapitate multiple monsters. His loyalty to the group and his mission is steadfast, as he continues forward even after discovering the true, frightening nature of the enemies they face.
Regarding key relationships, Gorō-Maru shares a strong bond with his two falcons, Taromaru and Jiromaru, treating them as valued partners rather than mere tools. When Taromaru is hit and falls to the ground during a battle, Gorō-Maru rushes to save his bird friend, demonstrating a deep care for the animal despite the danger. He also has a notable dynamic with his fellow warriors, particularly Heikuro and Sahei. The three of them work together closely, searching houses and discussing the motivations of their traitorous former leader. Heikuro provides him with tactical support during combat, helping him overcome his fear.
In terms of character development, Gorō-Maru grows from a warrior who needs encouragement to face monsters into a more resolute fighter who continues to battle alongside his comrades. His development is tragically cut short, as he is killed in the third episode by a spear thrown by one of Iemon's Genma henchmen. His death occurs as he is attempting to protect his falcon, underscoring his defining trait of loyalty and care for his animal companions.
Gorō-Maru possesses several notable abilities. He is a skilled swordsman capable of holding his own against the demonic zombie villagers. His most distinctive ability is his mastery of falconry; he commands two falcons, Taromaru and Jiromaru, who attack his enemies with precision, even beheading monsters in flight. This unique skill sets him apart from the other samurai in the group and proves invaluable in battle against the hordes of demonic foes.
