Description
Esuka Hibino emerges as the primary antagonist in the Shinemon narrative arc's opening. As the owner of the Esuka Corporation, a chain of beginner-friendly card shops known for their cozy environments, she purchases Card Capital after its previous owners' deaths, planning to remodel it into a standardized location. This decision brings her into direct conflict with Shinemon Nitta, who barricades himself inside the shop and declares himself its new manager.
Her background includes a period as a swimsuit model, specifically termed a Gravure model in the Japanese version, an adult-oriented but non-explicit field. Cultural adaptations adjusted this detail for English releases. Forced into modeling and later becoming a Cardfight!! Vanguard idol as the game rose in popularity, she quit after discovering opponents were bribed to lose against her, vowing to become a genuine cardfighter. During this time, she befriended Card Capital's original owners.
Esuka exhibits a strict, calculating business persona, initially dismissing Shinemon's actions as immature and irresponsible. She hires professional cardfighters to defeat him and his allies, personally challenging Shinemon with her Great Nature deck and winning their first fight. This victory allows her to force Shinemon out, criticizing his ineffective management that kept the shop closed and deterred customers. She offers him a conditional second chance via the Es-Cup tournament.
A significant shift occurs when Shinemon learns during their rematch that Esuka was actually a longtime friend of Card Capital's former owners. Sharing the goal of preserving the shop's legacy, they reconcile and agree to collaborate. Esuka transitions into Shinemon's mentor, training him rigorously over four years to become a responsible manager while funding his education. She proves a harsh but caring mentor, frequently addressing his mistakes while genuinely supporting his growth.
Her Great Nature deck, centered on the unit Holy Great Sage of Black Shadows, Isabelle, mirrors her personal history. The deck's reliance on random "Lottery" effects symbolizes her early life dictated by external forces, while Isabelle's ability to control these outcomes represents Esuka seizing control of her destiny.
Later, investigating Gear Chronicle after Shinemon's teammate Rive Shindou used the clan, she uncovers scientist Ryuzu Myoujin. His experiments aimed to prove planet Cray's existence and summon its lore units to Earth. Discovering Ryuzu's link to a fatal explosion and his intent to misuse Gear Chronicle's time powers, Esuka and Shinemon infiltrate his lab. Ryuzu defeats her in a cardfight, though others ultimately resolve the situation. She witnesses a unit summoned from Cray and the events where Rive becomes trapped on Cray saving his son, Chrono. Esuka chooses to conceal the truth about Rive's disappearance, letting Chrono believe his father died.
Ten years later, she serves as co-manager of Card Capital alongside Shinemon, maintaining their professional partnership despite occasional annoyance at his behavior. Notable traits include an extreme aversion to cats, causing panic even at a meow, and a general distrust of teenagers stemming from her own forced adolescence. These characteristics persist even after her relationship with Shinemon improves.
