ONA
Description
Naoya appears in the episode titled The Bully, which is part of the anthology series Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre. He is introduced as an adult man who was known as Nao during his childhood. As a child, he moved into a neighborhood and began playing with a girl named Kuriko, who was paid by his mother to keep him company. Over time, Kuriko grew tired of his constant presence and started bullying him, subjecting him to physical and psychological abuse. Despite this, Nao continued to seek her out, which deepened the cycle of mistreatment.

Years later, in adulthood, he reintroduces himself to Kuriko as Naoya. He reveals that he had been in love with her as a child, seeing her as the only person who ever talked to or spent time with him. His motivation appears complex: he expresses lingering affection, yet his actions later suggest a calculated, long‑term revenge. He re‑enters Kuriko’s life, courts her, and convinces her to leave her boyfriend. They marry and have a son named Hiroshi. Shortly after the child is born, Naoya disappears, abandoning both Kuriko and Hiroshi. Kuriko eventually comes to believe that Naoya’s entire scheme was a methodical act of vengeance for the cruelty she inflicted on him when they were children, trapping her in a cycle of guilt and repeating the same abusive pattern with their son.

Naoya’s personality is quiet and seemingly gentle, but there is an underlying darkness and a chilling patience. He does not display overt anger or malice; instead, he manipulates circumstances to achieve his end. His role in the story is that of a catalyst for Kuriko’s psychological unraveling. He is both a victim and an orchestrator, forcing Kuriko to confront her past sins. His key relationship is with Kuriko, as their childhood dynamic is inverted in adulthood. He also has a brief relationship with their son, though he ultimately abandons the child. There is no evidence that Naoya possesses supernatural abilities; his horror lies in his human capacity for repressed love turned into a cold, premeditated plan. His development is minimal on‑screen, as his character is largely defined by the reveal of his true intentions and the aftermath of his departure.
