ONA
Description
Ishida is a young student who becomes the central protagonist in the Alley segment of the Junji Ito Maniac anthology. He is depicted as an ordinary young man who rents a room in a boarding house, seeking an affordable place to live during his studies. His personality is characterized by a strong sense of curiosity and a rational, if somewhat naive, disposition. Initially, he appears untroubled and focused on his daily life, but he is also observant of his new surroundings. This inquisitive nature, however, borders on a critical flaw, as his determination to uncover the source of mysterious nighttime noises ultimately overrides his sense of self-preservation and the warnings he receives.

Ishida’s primary motivation is a desire to understand the strange events occurring in the sealed alley next to his room. His role in the story is that of an unwitting investigator, a newcomer who stumbles upon a long-concealed dark secret. He drives the plot forward by refusing to ignore the supernatural phenomena he experiences, such as the sounds of phantom children playing and a growling voice calling out for the landlady's daughter, Shinobu. His actions lead him to confront a former tenant, whose frantic story about a hidden window and murdered children initially seems like the rambling of a madman. However, Ishida’s need to verify the truth compels him to search his room, where he indeed discovers a window concealed behind a bookcase, proving the former tenant was telling the truth and setting the final, deadly chain of events in motion.

Within the story, Ishida’s key relationship is with the landlady, Mrs. Uchiyama, and her seemingly quiet middle-school daughter, Shinobu. At first, his interactions with them are polite and mundane, centered on the rules of the boarding house. Shinobu, in particular, initially appears helpful and concerned for his safety, warning him not to climb the dangerous fence to look into the alley. This relationship takes a horrifying turn when Ishida, having climbed down into the alley and discovered a hidden underground chamber with human remains, is confronted by Shinobu. She reveals her true nature as a remorseless serial killer who has used the alley as her personal execution ground for years, killing bullies, classmates, and even her own father. Shinobu is the story's antagonist, and Ishida becomes her final intended victim after he uncovers her secret.

In terms of character development, Ishida undergoes a transformation from a calm and collected student to a terrified victim trapped in a nightmare of his own making. He begins as an active protagonist, choosing to investigate the mystery, but by the end, he is reduced to a passive, unconscious figure. After being stabbed and falling back into the alley from the rope he was using to escape, he passes out from his injuries. His ultimate fate is ambiguous, as the narrative shifts its focus to Shinobu, who is left trapped in the alley at nightfall, where the vengeful spirits of her victims emerge from the wall to exact their retribution. Ishida’s function in the story is therefore to be the catalyst that finally exposes Shinobu’s crimes and brings about her downfall, even if he becomes a casualty in the process. He possesses no notable supernatural or special abilities; he is an everyman character whose normalcy serves to heighten the horror of the macabre world he inadvertently enters.
