Description
Atsushi Suedo is a Japanese karate fighter and a student of the Shinshinkai style, where he holds the rank of third dan. He is a tall and physically imposing figure, standing 205 centimeters (approximately 6 feet 9 inches) tall and weighing 130 kilograms (approximately 286 pounds). His muscular build and height make him one of the tallest Japanese characters in the series. Suedo has distinctive masculine facial features and typically wears a traditional karate gi, though he has also been seen in casual clothing like a jacket while spectating or a black sleeveless shirt during specific confrontations.

Suedo is introduced as the champion of the Shinshinkai's National Karate Tournament, having held the title for three consecutive years. He is an alumnus of Kiyosumi Kato, another member of the Shinshinkai dojo, and the two share a close bond, treating each other like brothers. At the start of his character arc, Suedo is depicted as arrogant, overconfident, and extremely irritable, especially regarding comments about his strength. His consistent victories in karate competitions have greatly enlarged his ego to the point where he even considers himself superior to his own master, Doppo Orochi, the head of the Shinshinkai. Suedo is a nervous person who is easy to anger, and his composure often shatters when his techniques prove ineffective in a fight.

His role in the story begins as a minor antagonist and the first official opponent for the protagonist, Baki Hanma. They meet in the finals of the 18th Annual Shinshinkai Karate Tournament. Despite his confidence, Suedo is quickly outclassed by the younger fighter. Baki dislocates Suedo's shoulder with an early jump kick, a feat of pain tolerance Suedo demonstrates by relocating his own shoulder on the spot, ignoring the referee and ringside doctors. In an attempt to gain an edge, he uses a special dental template designed to increase his overall strength by 30 percent, but discards it after Baki mocks him. Frustrated by his inability to land a significant blow, Suedo breaks the tournament rules to punch Baki in the face, which only results in a fractured hand for himself. He is ultimately defeated by a powerful jump kick from Baki, losing consciousness.

This defeat serves as a pivotal turning point for Suedo. His arrogance is replaced by humility, and he develops a deep, newfound respect for Doppo Orochi, whom he had previously ridiculed. This loyalty is demonstrated fiercely later when, during Doppo's legendary battle against Yujiro Hanma, Suedo impulsively leaps into the arena to defend his master and proclaim the superiority of Shinshinkai Karate. His reckless bravery is met with a single, devastating punch from Yujiro that knocks him unconscious. He also becomes a supportive spectator for Baki, cheering him on during subsequent matches and even noting parallels between Baki's pre-fight rituals before their match and those before the finals of the Maximum Tournament.

Suedo's motivations are deeply rooted in his devotion to the Shinshinkai school. He seeks to avenge his friend Kiyosumi Kato when Kato is nearly killed by the death row convict Kaioh Dorian. Confronting Dorian at an amusement park, Suedo initially lands several blows, his powerful physique allowing him to withstand attacks that would fell others. The fight moves to a roller coaster, where Suedo utilizes the Sanchin stance, a technique taught by Doppo to improve balance and footing on unstable ground. However, he underestimates his opponent and is ultimately overwhelmed by Dorian, suffering near-fatal injuries. This encounter highlights his unwavering loyalty and his willingness to sacrifice himself for the dojo, while also underscoring his limitations against elite-level fighters.

Regarding his notable abilities, Suedo possesses exceptional physical prowess even by the standards of the series. His physical conditioning includes a bench press of 270 kilograms (approximately 595 pounds) and the ability to run 100 meters in 11 seconds while barefoot. His strikes are powerful enough to crack concrete, and his durability allows him to withstand impacts that could collapse small structures. His fighting style is rooted in foundational Shinshinkai Karate, without any esoteric or supernatural techniques. He is known to use the Sanchin stance for improved stability and has demonstrated a high tolerance for pain, as shown when he reset his own dislocated shoulder during his fight with Baki.
