His appearance is striking and robust; he possesses a burly, broad-shouldered frame with a thick chest and neck. He has dark bronze hair styled into a distinctive pompadour and small cobalt blue eyes, complemented by a thin beard that frames his face. True to his position as a gym instructor, he is never without a whistle around his neck. His athletic attire consists of black pants and a red jacket with gold stripes, which features a golden stag-head emblem on the right side of the chest. He also wears a unique golden bracelet on his left wrist, shaped like a curled arrow with a blood-red tip.

Vargas has an exceptionally narcissistic and enterprising personality, defined by a huge ego that is heavily invested in his own muscular physique. His core philosophy is that physical strength is not just beneficial but vital for the effective use of magic, a belief he aggressively promotes to his students. Born in the Shaftlands, Vargas did not graduate from Night Raven College himself, having attended a different school. Nevertheless, he is very familiar with the campus, having competed against it frequently as a member of his own school's Spelldrive team. He speaks of his hometown with great pride, claiming that even in temperatures well below freezing, he was the most handsome, athletic, and muscular boy around. In his role at the college, he maintains a positive relationship with Headmaster Dire Crowley, although Crowley has admitted that Vargas’s excessive enthusiasm can sometimes be discouraging. Vargas also shows a mix of respect and fear for his colleague, the strict history teacher Mozus Trein, and tends to be more restrained in his presence. His dedication to physical conditioning is such that he once proposed making student uniforms out of heavier fabric to build muscle, a suggestion the headmaster considered. This commitment is perhaps most visible during events like the training camp he organizes, where he pushes students to their limits with ultimatums to build their physical strength.
