Despite this seemingly gentle exterior, his true personality is strikingly different; he is a brash and hot-headed country boy with a short temper and a rough manner of speaking, which starkly contrasts with his feminine looks.

Epel comes from a rural farming community known as the Village of Harvest or Harveston, where his family runs an apple orchard. He lives in a large, multi-generational household that includes his parents, grandparents, and other relatives. His upbringing in this agricultural environment has instilled in him a deep love for his hometown and its products, particularly apples, which he is skilled at carving. This background also makes him self-conscious about being perceived as an unsophisticated country bumpkin, a fear that initially makes him reserved around those from more urban backgrounds. The first time he had significant interactions with people his own age was upon his arrival at the prestigious college.

One of Epel’s primary motivations is a desire to become stronger and more masculine. He greatly admires the muscular physiques of students from the Savanaclaw dormitory as well as the school's gym teacher, Ashton Vargas. In fact, he had hoped to be sorted into Savanaclaw himself, believing it would help him achieve this goal, and was deeply disappointed to be placed in Pomefiore, which he initially saw as focusing on beauty and elegance rather than toughness. He particularly hates being mistaken for a girl or being called cute, and he struggles to suppress his natural, more aggressive inclinations to fit into Pomefiore’s refined culture.

Throughout the main story, Epel undergoes significant development, particularly during his preparation for a major singing and dancing competition. He frequently clashes with his dormitory's housewarden, Vil Schoenheit, who strictly disciplines Epel's speech, posture, and behavior to cultivate his natural beauty. This leads to Epel feeling repressed and he even briefly considers leaving the dorm. However, his perspective changes when Vil uses his influence on social media to successfully promote and sell a struggling batch of apples from Epel’s family farm. Through this act, Epel finally understands Vil’s lesson: that his delicate features are not a weakness but a unique form of power he can strategically use. From this point, he begins to respect Vil, even referring to him as "our queen" in later chapters, while still finding his methods harsh.

His key relationships extend beyond Vil. He has a close friendship with fellow first-year Deuce Spade, who empathizes with Epel's struggles and encourages him to express his frustrations. He shares a brotherly dynamic with his dorm’s vice-housewarden, Rook Hunt, who often gives him advice and support, even if Epel finds him to be an odd and difficult-to-understand person. As a member of the college's spelldrive (magic飞盘) club, Epel is considered a promising new star, and he respects the club captain, Leona Kingscholar, for his strength and tactical mind. In his class, 1-B, he is a classmate of Jack Howl.

In terms of abilities, Epel excels in the subject of flying, demonstrating both speed and agility on his broom. His unique magic is called Sleep Kiss, also known as the Crimson Fruit. This spell allows him to encase a target in a magical barrier resembling a glass coffin, which puts the person inside into a deep sleep and protects them from external harm. This versatile magic can be used as a shield for allies or as a cage to neutralize enemies.
