Description
Makina Kurusu is a main protagonist of the anime. She is a twenty-three-year-old cyborg, originally from a wealthy family that runs the powerful Titan Industries. Her full name is Kurusu Makina. She is arrested alongside her childhood friend Chiharu Kujo for violating space traffic laws, including speeding and resisting arrest, and is sentenced to community service cleaning the interstellar train known as the Milky Subway.
Makina’s personality is rough and somewhat aggressive. She speaks bluntly, often using coarse language, and is quick to escalate conflicts. She has a short temper and a history of getting into fights, particularly when she perceives a threat to Chiharu. Despite this aggressive exterior, she possesses a sharp mind and can formulate plans quickly in stressful situations. She is also a devoted fan of the idol singer Minami Miyase, and her fandom helps her bond with other characters. Her motivations are primarily driven by her loyalty to Chiharu, whom she has known since school. She tends to act impulsively, especially when Chiharu is involved, but over the course of the story she begins to consider the well-being of the larger group.
In the narrative, Makina is one of six convicts assigned to clean the Milky Subway. When the train unexpectedly departs due to a malfunction, she must navigate the chaos alongside the others. Her role is that of a quick-witted troubleshooter, using her technical knowledge of Titan-made systems to help the group overcome obstacles. She often clashes with the other convicts, particularly the superhuman Akane Daidoji, but later forms a friendship with her after discovering their shared love for the same idol. Her relationship with Chiharu is central: she is fiercely protective, but also enabling of Chiharu’s carelessness, a dynamic that the police officer Ryoko Kanzaki criticizes. As the story progresses, Makina learns to cooperate with the other convicts, including the cyborgs Kurt Cramer and Max MacCallister, whose help she begrudgingly accepts. Her development culminates in the final episode, where she uses her cyborg abilities to synchronize her consciousness with the train’s systems, transforming it into a giant robot to defeat the antagonist O.T.A.M. and save her companions.
Makina’s notable abilities stem from her cyborg nature. Her body is an old Titan model, but it is high-performance and includes a custom emotion reproduction program. She can project an electric current from her hands, which she uses as a taser to disable opponents. She is mechanically adept and familiar with Titan-manufactured technology, allowing her to quickly diagnose and manipulate the train’s control panels. However, her body has a flaw: an outdated air filter that clogs easily, causing her performance to drop and occasionally emit smoke. She is also known to have a criminal record with seventeen prior police encounters, mostly involving assaults committed on Chiharu’s behalf. Over the course of the series, she matures from a hotheaded delinquent into a more responsible team player, willing to sacrifice her own safety for the group.
