ONA
Description
The figure known as the Grand Master is the central antagonist of the Sanctuary arc and the ultimate obstacle for the Bronze Knights. While initially presented as the holy and revered leader of the Sanctuary, this character is revealed to be an impostor who has secretly ruled for thirteen years. The true identity of the Grand Master is Gemini Saga, one of the most powerful Gold Knights, who suffers from a profound dual personality disorder.

The background of this character is rooted in a tragic fall from grace. Originally, Saga was a benevolent and powerful Gold Knight of the Gemini constellation, beloved by those in the Sanctuary. However, he was passed over for the position of Grand Master in favor of Aioros of Sagittarius, an act that fully awakened a dark, malevolent side that had always slept within him. This evil persona murdered the previous Grand Master, Shion, and assumed his place, masking his face with a mysterious helmet to conceal his identity. He then attempted to murder the infant goddess Athena, a crime he successfully framed on the loyal knight Aioros, branding him a traitor and forcing him to flee with the baby.

The personality of the Grand Master is a study in duality, which is the core of his character. The public-facing persona is calm, authoritative, and seemingly wise, capable of giving orders that command absolute obedience from the Saints. In the context of the story, he is initially seen as the only one who can remove the golden arrow from Athena's chest, giving Seiya a desperate reason to confront him. However, upon Seiya's arrival in the Grand Master's throne room, he initially appears cooperative, even explaining how to save the goddess. This cooperative and gentle behavior is a manifestation of Saga's original, good-natured personality struggling for control.

This fragile peace shatters when the dark, evil personality resurfaces. This alternate persona is a ruthless, power-hungry tyrant obsessed with ruling the world. He is manipulative and cruel, having used a technique called the Imperial Demon Illusion to control other Saints for his own purposes. Unlike the benevolent side, the dark Saga is driven by pure ambition and a desire to eliminate anyone who threatens his rule, including Athena and her Saints. The ultimate tragedy of his character is that the good and evil sides exist within the same body, constantly warring for control over his actions.

The Grand Master's primary motivation throughout the Battle for Sanctuary is to maintain his iron grip on the Sanctuary and eliminate the reincarnated Athena to prevent her from foiling his plans for global domination. The arrow lodged in Athena's chest was placed by his order, and he fully intends to let it kill her, which would secure his power. He is driven by the dark side's insatiable ambition, while the suppressed good side desperately seeks atonement for his crimes, creating an internal conflict that defines his role as a tragic villain.

In the story, his role is twofold. On the surface, he is the puppeteer who has corrupted the Sanctuary, turning it against its true goddess. For the Bronze Knights, he is the final boss, the last and most powerful guardian standing between them and the salvation of Athena. The entire journey through the Twelve Temples is a race against time to reach him. Upon their confrontation, Seiya must face not only the Grand Master's overwhelming power but also the shocking truth that their ultimate enemy is one of Athena's own Gold Knights, suffering from a split personality he cannot control.

The key relationships are defined by deception and tragedy. The most significant is with the goddess Athena, Saori Kido, whom he has sworn to destroy, representing the ultimate betrayal of a Saint's duty. He framed the Sagittarius Gold Knight Aioros, making him a martyr and a traitor, which led to Aioros's death and the exile of the goddess. He also has a complex connection to his twin brother, Kanon. According to legend, it was Kanon who first awakened the evil in Saga's heart, for which Saga imprisoned him as punishment, showcasing the tragic influence his family has on his destiny.

The character experiences a notable development in the final moments of his story arc. When Seiya, empowered by the cosmos of his fallen friends, manages to land a decisive blow, the good side of Saga briefly regains control. In this moment of clarity, filled with remorse for his unspeakable crimes, the true Saga uses the goddess's shield to prove his loyalty, then takes his own life to atone for the evil he was unable to contain, finding a final, tragic redemption in death.

Regarding notable abilities, the Grand Master is arguably one of the most formidable characters in the series. As a Gold Knight of Gemini, his cosmos is immensely powerful, easily surpassing that of the Bronze Saints. His signature physical technique is the Galaxian Explosion, an attack of immense destructive power said to be capable of destroying stars and galaxies by releasing his cosmos to its absolute limit. He can also use telekinesis to control his Gold Cloth from a distance, creating a phantom fighter to confuse his enemies. One of his most dangerous powers is the Imperial Demon Illusion, a psychological attack that takes control of the victim's brain, turning them into a mindless slave who will obey his every command until their target is destroyed. His physical strikes are also so powerful that they can rob a person of their five senses one by one, as demonstrated when he rapidly deprived Seiya of sight, hearing, and more in their final battle.
