ONA
Description
Musashi Miyamoto is the primary antagonist of Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai. He is a legendary seventeenth-century samurai resurrected in the modern era through a combination of cloning technology and spiritual intervention. After his mummified corpse was exhumed, DNA extracted from his spine was used to grow a new body. The empty clone was then infused with his original soul by the spirit medium Sabuko Tokugawa, restoring his memories and skills. This process was funded and overseen by Mitsunari Tokugawa, the eccentric billionaire and descendant of the Tokugawa clan that Musashi once served.
Musashi was born during the Sengoku era of Japan and killed his first opponent at thirteen years old. He went on to remain undefeated in sixty-two recorded duels, creating his own swordsmanship style known as Niten Ichi-ryu, which involves wielding two blades as one. He authored The Book of Five Rings and died of lung cancer at age sixty-one. In the series, he is portrayed as a heavily fictionalized and dramatized version of the historical figure, with his abilities exaggerated to fit the world of Baki.
In terms of personality, Musashi is extremely straightforward and acts as an ambitious fame-seeking artist of martial arts who desires to reclaim the glory he once had. He is mentally distant from the rest of the world, even more so than the prehistoric fighter Pickle, and he struggles to adapt to the modern age. His mindset is distorted by a lack of sympathy for others, and he only considers sparing those he pities. He rarely goes all-out and instead mocks most of his opponents. Despite this, he has a code of honor: he will match an opponent's level of force with equal force. If a fighter challenges him one-on-one without lethal intent, he will defeat them without killing them. However, if multiple opponents attack him with lethal intent, he treats the encounter as war and shows no mercy. He respects opponents who face him in a proper contest.
Musashi's primary motivation is to find his place in a world that no longer has the battlefield he once knew. He seeks to prove the superiority of his ancient swordsmanship over modern martial arts and to reclaim the fame and glory of his legendary status. He systematically dismantles the strongest fighters in Japan to demonstrate the supremacy of his style.
His role in the story is that of the ultimate historical threat. His resurrection disrupts the entire hierarchy of the martial arts world, forcing characters like Baki Hanma, Yujiro Hanma, and the other Underground Arena fighters to confront a philosophy of combat that views every encounter as a life-or-death duel rather than a sport or test of strength. He is the catalyst for the entire arc of Baki-Dou.
Key relationships include his lethal rivalry with Izo Motobe, a master of jujutsu and traditional weaponry who understands the reality of armed combat. Motobe acts as a self-appointed guardian of the modern fighters against Musashi's killing intent. His rivalry with Retsu Kaioh becomes a defining moment, as Retsu challenges him to prove the worth of Chinese martial arts, resulting in a tragic outcome. He also holds a mutual respect with Yujiro Hanma, the strongest creature on earth, who recognizes Musashi's power. His confrontation with Baki Hanma forces Baki to adapt his empty-handed philosophy to face a man who views combat as slaughter. He encounters Pickle, the prehistoric man, and notes that fighting him is more engaging because he can withstand multiple slashes.
Musashi does not undergo significant personal development in the conventional sense; rather, his arc explores his attempt to find his place in the modern world and his systematic testing of the strongest fighters. His static nature is contrasted with the evolution of those around him.
Notable abilities include his supreme swordsmanship and his creation of the Niten Ichi-ryu style. He possesses a technique known as Imitation Cut, which allows him to make opponents feel as though they have been cut and experience real pain without physically touching them. This sense manipulation is a reflection of his incredible skill. He can kill opponents with a single punch but relies primarily on his swordsmanship. His body is immensely durable, able to withstand powerful blows from Retsu Kaioh, Hanayama, and Pickle, and he can endure a two-hundred-thousand-volt electric shock. He has incredible grip strength, comparable to Kaoru Hanayama, and can lift opponents with ease while at a mechanical disadvantage. He can cut through the skin of the toughest fighters in the series, including Pickle and Yujiro Hanma. He is a battlefield genius with high intelligence, able to analyze and adapt to any situation. His speed is extraordinary, allowing him to act before opponents can react. He is also a master of multiple martial arts from his era and can adapt his fighting style to any opponent's approach.
