Description
In the universe of Bastard!! -Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy-: Hell's Requiem, Anthrax is a being of immense destructive power whose very name inspires terror. Often referred to as the God of Destruction, this entity is not a creature of magic as many believe, but rather a product of science, created long ago by a coalition of scientists, magicians, and alchemists who sought to end all wars. The result of their ambition was a female demon of unparalleled power, a living weapon that would ultimately turn on its creators.
Anthrax is described as a colossal, chimeric mass of organic flesh and machinery, comparable in size to a small mountain. Her appearance is biomechanical and grotesque, featuring horns and spikes protruding from her back. Her most distinctive feature is her two faces: one is a terrifying demonic visage, which is split apart to reveal a second face of a beautiful woman, creating a disquieting fusion of horror and serenity.
Her background is rooted in an ancient war. After being unleashed, Anthrax single-handedly destroyed entire cities, but she soon developed her own free will and declared war on humanity. Using her powerful telepathy, she communicated with other demon gods and forced her will upon mankind, bringing civilization to the brink of extinction. The only being capable of stopping her was the legendary Dragon Knight. Their battle was cataclysmic, lasting ten days and causing environmental devastation on a global scale, including boiling the oceans, sinking continents, and shifting the planet’s axis. The Dragon Knight ultimately defeated Anthrax and sealed her deep underground with four powerful seals, where she lay dormant for centuries.
In the story, Anthrax serves as the ultimate threat, the dark force that various factions seek to either awaken or control. Her sleeping form is initially imprisoned beneath the castle of the Kingdom of Judas, chained by the four seals. Her presence drives much of the plot's conflict, as the antagonists work to break these seals and unleash her upon the world once more. She is worshipped as a deity by her followers, such as the dark priest Abigail, who acts as one of her divine kings and is deeply devoted to her cause.
While initially appearing as a purely destructive demon god, there is a deeper layer to Anthrax's identity. Later events reveal that this biomechanical body was merely a vessel for a higher order of being. The entity known as Anthrax is, in truth, an angel that was given the mission to enact divine judgment against humanity for the sin of manipulating life. This revelation recontextualizes her not just as a rogue weapon, but as an instrument of a greater, celestial will. When she finally frees herself from her seals, the ensuing battle leads to the protagonist, Dark Schneider, being banished to Hell.
Anthrax possesses a staggering array of abilities befitting her title as God of Destruction. Her primary means of attack is firing immensely powerful energy blasts from her mouth, such as the Anthra Light Ray. She can manipulate gravity to fly and lift massive sections of the earth, and she has complete control over the weather, able to create tornados that cover country-sized areas. Her telepathic abilities are vast, allowing her to project her image across vast distances and communicate globally. She can generate powerful defensive barriers and even manipulate space around her to evade attacks. Furthermore, Anthrax can create and control monstrous flesh creatures from her own cells, absorb the souls of the dead to increase her power, and infect other beings with her cells to control their minds. Her resilience is immense, having tanked powerful spells and fought for ten days straight, and she possesses a potent regenerative ability that makes her incredibly difficult to destroy.
