Description
Hiroki Boco Wada is an eleven-year-old boy and one of the main human characters in the 2023 Netflix series. He lives in Tokyo with his mother, Aiko Wada, who works as a copywriter. He is a sixth-grader who is scheduled to attend summer school, a prospect he dislikes as he wishes to spend his vacation playing with his two best friends, Satoru Joe Matsuoka and Jun Junichi Ichihara. His nickname, Boco, is the name used most frequently by his friends and family.
Boco is characterized as a headstrong and compassionate child who often acts on instinct to help others, sometimes disregarding his own safety. This is first demonstrated when he ignores his friends warnings to rescue a turtle trapped in a pond at their treehouse. Despite being physically small and having a complex about not being able to ride a bicycle, he possesses a fearless and determined nature. When a local bully, Douglas Ken Brody Osborn, steals money from the group, Boco is ready to confront him again to get it back. His innate sense of compassion also extends to his enemies; when a Gyaos attacks, he refuses to leave the cowering Brody behind, choosing to save him despite their previous conflicts. He has a strong sense of justice and can become fiercely argumentative when faced with something he believes is wrong, a trait that sometimes even startles the more hot-headed Joe into silence.
Bocos primary motivation throughout the story is the protection of his friends. He is the first to trust the giant turtle kaiju, naming it Gamera, because he intuitively feels the creature is protecting them rather than hunting them. This bond becomes the emotional core of his journey. Initially trusting of the Eustace Foundation and its representatives, James Tazaki and Dr. Emiko Melchiorri, Boco eventually discovers the organizations true goal. He is revealed to be a code-holder, a key that, if fed to a kaiju, would allow the creature to devour all humanity, a plan the Foundation wishes to enact to purify the Earth. Learning this shifts his role from a curious observer to a primary target for the worlds kaiju and a key figure in the survival of humanity.
Bocos most significant relationship is with the kaiju Gamera. The two share a telepathic link, with Boco often experiencing headaches or sensing the creatures presence before it arrives. He maintains an unshakable faith in Gamera even when the monster is turned evil by a virus injected by Gyaos, insisting on the inherent goodness of his protector and calling him back to his senses. He also shares a deep bond with his friend Joe, whom he views as an older brother figure, and is devastated by Joes presumed death. His relationship with Brody evolves from antagonistic to a genuine friendship, as Boco is the first to extend an olive branch and Brody later follows Bocos moral lead by standing up to his own father.
Throughout the series, Boco develops from a reckless child who runs headfirst into danger to a determined young individual who understands the weight of sacrifice. After losing Joe, he refuses to let Gamera die as well, pleading with the adults to save the kaiju. In the climax, he willingly puts himself in harms way to distract the Gyaos and buy time for Gamera to be revived, demonstrating a mature understanding of his own role as a protector in return for the protection Gamera has always offered him. By the end of the story, he resolves that it is now his and his friends turn to protect the reborn, smaller version of Gamera.
Aside from his telepathic connection to Gamera, Boco has no supernatural abilities. His notable traits are his courage, empathy, and moral certainty, which serve as the primary catalyst for the groups decisions and directly influence Gameras actions in battle.
