Description
James Joshua Tazaki serves as an agent for the Eustace Foundation, a global organization involved in energy resource development and kaiju research. In this capacity, he acts as a skilled negotiator and coordinator, frequently liaising with the United States military when kaiju threats emerge. Tazaki is highly competent at his job, particularly in negotiations, where he knows exactly how to persuade others, including convincing the parents of the young protagonists to send their children to a Foundation facility.

Tazaki's professional demeanor, however, conceals a more complex personal history. He joined the Foundation with the specific ambition of earning enough to travel to the Moon and start his own business. This dream stems from his childhood, when his father's business failed, leaving the family penniless. His father died without financial success, forcing a young Tazaki to work hard, earn a scholarship, and graduate from college. This background instills in him a pragmatic, sometimes self-interested worldview, as he fears that his hard work will be for nothing if he loses his life working for an organization that keeps secrets from him.

Initially, Tazaki is not portrayed as a natural leader in crisis situations. When a kaiju attacks the ship transporting the children, he becomes scared and frustrated, failing to remain calm, and a colleague has to manage the situation. His growing suspicion that the Foundation is hiding critical information about the kaiju, including their true plans, leads him to quit his job, even if it means abandoning the children in a dangerous situation. This decision reflects his initial priority of self-preservation over heroism.

Despite his resignation, Tazaki finds himself drawn back into the conflict. He is persuaded to take command of troops and oversee an evacuation during another kaiju attack, demonstrating that his skills are indispensable. His relationship with a colleague, Emiko Melchiorri, becomes a key motivator; he develops feelings for her and risks his life to save her. However, he soon discovers that Emiko is not the person she seemed. She is revealed to be complicit in a plan to revive a kaiju named Viras and feed the children to it to achieve global destruction, intending to escape to the Moon herself. In response, Tazaki performs a crucial act of betrayal, pretending to cooperate with Emiko's scheme while secretly working against her. He helps the children escape and secures their passage on a space shuttle, fleeing the planet with them as Viras is revived.

Tazaki's character undergoes significant development through his interactions with the children, whom he initially does not particularly like. After their escape, he wants nothing more than to distance himself from the entire situation. However, the children persuade him that helping the kaiju Gamera is the only way to ensure the Foundation does not come after him later. He uses his negotiation skills to contact the Japanese government and convince them to save a dying Gamera. He also follows the children when one of them puts himself in danger, showing a growing sense of responsibility and care for them. By the end of the story, Tazaki has transformed from a self-serving agent focused on his own ambitions to a protector of the children and a key figure in the fight against the Foundation's schemes. Following the final battle, he severs all ties with the Foundation. Using his experiences, he gets the idea to create a new device that changes the way people interact, which ultimately becomes the mobile phone, leading to his eventual success.
