ONA
Description
North No. 2 is a former combat robot from Scotland who later serves as a butler for the blind composer Paul Duncan. He was originally built by a scientist as a machine of war, optimized for maximum destruction, and fought on the front lines during the 39th Central Asian War. His body is beetle-like and stands roughly eight feet tall, typically concealed under a large cape. Underneath, he possesses six mechanical arms: one pair equipped with large blades for close combat, another pair with heavy machine guns, and a third pair of normal human hands that can also function as drills, pincers, or hammers. Instead of legs, he uses a jet engine that allows him to glide across the ground or fly through the air, making him highly mobile in battle. Among the seven strongest robots in the world, North No. 2 is the most explicitly designed for military purposes.

Despite his war-built nature, North No. 2 wishes to leave his violent past behind. After the war, he is assigned as an assistant to Paul Duncan, a bitter elderly composer who has been unable to complete a piece of music tied to his childhood. North No. 2 quietly endures Duncan’s initial hostility, suspicion, and even physical aggression, patiently observing his habits and trying to understand him. His motivation is not simply to perform his duties but to find a new purpose and a place to belong. He becomes fascinated by music, seeing it as an anchor that can keep him from ever returning to the battlefield. He asks Duncan to teach him how to play the piano, an act that represents his yearning for humanity and peace.

North No. 2’s bond with Duncan deepens when he travels to Bohemia, Duncan’s home country, and uncovers the truth about Duncan’s mother: she did not abandon Duncan as he believed, but stayed with him until she died, and Duncan went blind due to illness. This revelation frees Duncan from his hatred, and he finally completes his composition. In gratitude and friendship, Duncan agrees to teach North No. 2 the piano. Their relationship transforms from master-servant to something like family, built on mutual respect and affection.

However, North No. 2’s peaceful life is cut short when the robot Pluto begins killing the world’s seven most powerful robots. Despite knowing the danger, North No. 2 chooses to fight Pluto in a final battle over Duncan’s estate. He fights bravely, using all his arms and weapons, slamming Pluto into a cliff and initially holding his own. But Pluto eventually destroys his six arms and deals a fatal blow, causing North No. 2 to fall from the sky and be destroyed. His death is a tragic end to a character who had just begun to find meaning beyond violence.

Throughout the story, North No. 2 is defined by his quiet determination, his capacity for loyalty, and his relentless pursuit of a better self. He is gentle in his interactions, patient under mistreatment, and ultimately willing to sacrifice himself to protect the person who showed him kindness. His arc highlights themes of redemption, the desire for peace after war, and the power of art to bridge differences. His abilities as a weapon are formidable, but his true strength lies in his will to become something more than what he was built for.
