Description
Max is a male cyborg from the anime Milky Subway: The Galactic Limited Express, also known by his full name Max O'Donald MacCallister. He has a distinctive appearance: blond hair and a black monitor-style face that displays minimal expressions, with a noticeably processed voice. He frequently tends to his hair, showing a concern for his appearance.
Max is a former member of the space military. He originally enlisted because he was narcissistic and feared the effects of aging, and he was promised free cyborg surgery that would halt the aging process. However, after the surgery, he lost his original handsome face, which was completely replaced by mechanical components. The harsh training in the military led him to retire. After leaving the service, he took ordinary jobs such as cleaning or food service, but he felt he was treated like a machine and never thanked for his work. This lack of appreciation, along with prejudice against cyborgs, drove him to quit and eventually join a company that operates in legally gray areas: Dows and Smith Defense Services (commonly known as DS Security). He and his partner, Kurt, were arrested while smuggling sugar, which is a regulated substance in their star federation.
In terms of personality, Max comes across as indifferent and detached from others. He spends much of his free time playing games and shows little interest in people. He can be flippant and teasing in conversation, often making jokes or giving nicknames. Despite this outwardly cold demeanor, he responds strongly to genuine gratitude. When Chiharu thanks him for disabling a security robot, he and Kurt decide to waive the remaining payment and join the group. This reveals a core motivation: he craves recognition and human connection, but he hides it behind a cynical, businesslike exterior. He is also somewhat childlike in his honesty—during a police interrogation, he easily falls for a trick that forces him to confess his true feelings about being undervalued as a cyborg.
Max's role in the story is that of a supporting character among the six convicts assigned to clean the interstellar train the Milky Subway. He and Kurt initially refuse to help the others, preferring to stay uninvolved. After accepting a small payment, they quickly disable a security robot using Max's hacking device and Kurt's strength. From that point onward, they become part of the core group, contributing their technical and combat skills to survive the train's runaway journey.
His key relationship is with Kurt, his longtime partner. They work together seamlessly, with Max handling hacking and gadget operation while Kurt handles physical tasks. They often sync their responses and share a dry humor. It is implied that they were assigned to work together after both passed the company's hiring test, and they have since become close friends as well as colleagues. Max also has a significant, though less developed, dynamic with the other convicts: he initially mocks Makina, but later shows respect when she pays him, and he is genuinely affected by Chiharu's simple thank you.
Development occurs over the course of the train incident. Max begins as someone who only acts for money, but after being thanked, he begins to open up and cooperate without demanding payment. He confesses that he quit normal jobs because "no one ever thanked him," and the experience of being appreciated by the group softens his cynicism. His past as a once-handsome man who sacrificed his face in a failed attempt to preserve his looks adds a layer of tragedy to his character, and he actively saves money to upgrade his face to a more expressive animatronic model, indicating a desire to reclaim a part of his lost humanity.
Notable abilities include exceptional memory and information processing, enabling him to hack into electronic systems quickly. He is the group's gadget operator, capable of disabling security robots and bypassing digital locks. His cyborg body gives him the durability to function in space without a helmet, although he still uses protective gear when needed. He also carries a personal device for hacking and can improvise solutions to technical problems.
