ONA
Description
Kanata, whose full name is Kanata Iwao, is a fictional character from the anime series Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express. He is a young man categorized as a superhuman, a genetically modified type of human with distinctive pink skin, which allows him to survive the harsh conditions of space. He is a member of a space biker gang called the Galaxy Spirits and was arrested alongside his gang's leader, Akane, for the crime of speeding.

In terms of personality, Kanata presents the classic image of a Japanese delinquent, wearing nonconformist clothes such as a tank top and a purple outfit bearing various phrases and place names. He adopts a loud, boisterous, and quick-tempered demeanor, often walking with a crouched, aggressive posture and his hands in his pockets to appear more intimidating than he really is. Despite this tough facade, he is largely a boisterous weakling, meaning his bark is worse than his bite, and he often causes trouble or escalates situations with his confrontational attitude. Beneath this exterior lies a significant degree of insecurity. He is acutely aware that he is more noise than action and feels useless, particularly because he is frequently overprotected by those around him. Having grown tired of overprotective parenting, he turned to a life of delinquency, only to find himself once again in a heavily protected position as the ward of Akane.

This dynamic with Akane is the central relationship of Kanata's life and the core of his role in the story. The two are a classic red oni, blue oni pair, with Kanata as the loud, impulsive complement to Akane's quiet, calm, and fiercely protective demeanor. Akane is a tall, imposing woman with immense physical strength, and she is excessively protective of Kanata, to the point of becoming violent should any harm come to him. While Kanata respects Akane deeply and works to prevent her from suffering any social embarrassment, he also struggles with the feeling that he has no value or purpose because she insists on shielding him from all danger. Akane famously compares him to the tail of a shrimp tempura, meaning something that is not strictly necessary but is also indispensable. Kanata understands that she intends this as a sign of affection, but he does not wish to simply be protected. His primary motivation throughout the series is to prove his worth and earn Akane's trust as a capable partner rather than a burden to be guarded.

As the story progresses, Kanata gets his opportunity to prove himself. When the group is trapped in a train bathroom during an emergency, his true hidden depths are revealed. While he seems like an unimpressive braggart on the surface, he possesses advanced knowledge of mechanics and engineering. He is able to immediately grasp a complex technical plan proposed by two experienced cyborg soldiers, Kurt and Max, and then use his small stature to crawl through the cramped ceiling ducts and rewire the control system, successfully unlocking the door. This moment of competence is a turning point, showing that his intelligence and practical skills are precisely what the group needs in a crisis, especially within the confined spaces of the Milky Subway. After witnessing his resourcefulness firsthand, a shaken Akane apologizes for underestimating him, and she begins to trust him more, eventually entrusting him with a critical control key during a later confrontation with police robots. In this way, Kanata evolves from a simple, hot-headed delinquent into a valued member of the ragtag group, earning his place not through brute force but through his unique mechanical talents and his unwavering, if often bumbling, loyalty to his partner. His notable abilities, therefore, are not combat-oriented but lie in his sharp technical mind and his talent for machinery, making him an unlikely but essential member of the team.
