Description
Gonzō Kosugi is a character from the anime Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, where he serves as a primary antagonist. He is a 42-year-old man who was formerly the team leader and supervisor of the protagonist, Akira Tendō, at a so-called "black company" known for its exploitative labor practices. Before the zombie apocalypse, Kosugi embodied the archetype of an abusive and tyrannical boss. He was known for his power-harassing management style, which included constantly changing instructions, refusing to admit his own mistakes, and forbidding his subordinates from leaving work before he did. He treated his employees not as people but as disposable tools, creating a deeply toxic and dehumanizing work environment that pushed Akira to his mental and physical limits. In his personal life, Kosugi’s hobby was playing grass baseball as the leader of a team called the "COSGIES."

Following the outbreak of the zombie pandemic, Kosugi's inherent nature did not change; instead, it intensified. He survived by gathering the surviving members of his baseball team and establishing a base at a highway rest stop. There, he created a petty authoritarian regime that mirrored the oppressive structures of his old workplace. His group set traps, such as spike belts on the road, to cause accidents for passing survivors. Kosugi would then offer medical treatment to the injured in exchange for forced labor, effectively turning refugees into slaves who were forced to work without rest. When Akira Tendō and his friend Kenichirō Ryūzaki fell into one of these traps, resulting in Kenichirō being severely injured, Akira was compelled to work for Kosugi to pay for the treatment. Kosugi immediately resumed his psychological manipulation, attempting to break Akira’s spirit and convince him that he was incapable of surviving independently, effectively trying to turn him back into a living, obedient worker.

Kosugi's personality is defined by selfishness, brutality, and a complete lack of empathy. He is an insecure and cowardly man who has no real leadership skills or practical abilities of his own. To compensate, he uses psychological and emotional abuse to dominate others and make them reliant on him. He is also portrayed as lecherous and misogynistic, making perverted advances toward Shizuka Mikazuki and demeaning women based on their appearance. His role in the story is to serve as a direct obstacle to Akira's newfound freedom, representing the oppressive past that Akira is trying to escape. The key confrontation occurs when Shizuka helps Akira resist Kosugi's manipulation. Akira finally stands up to his former boss, declaring that he would rather die in the zombie-infested world than spend another second under his control.

Kosugi's development, or rather his lack thereof, leads directly to his downfall. When a horde of zombies breaches his compound due to a subordinate's error, Kosugi reveals his utter cowardice by fleeing in panic, leaving everyone else to fend for themselves. He quickly becomes surrounded and is too out of shape to escape. Despite everything, Akira saves his life. However, this act of compassion only serves to expose Kosugi's true nature to all. Having abandoned his own group and shown no loyalty or courage, he loses the respect and trust of everyone, including his old baseball teammates. After the crisis is averted, Kosugi is left completely alone at the rest stop, sobbing and begging to be taken along, but he is universally rejected and abandoned.

In terms of abilities, Kosugi possesses no remarkable physical strength, combat skills, or survival instincts. His only notable ability is his talent for psychological manipulation and emotional abuse, which he honed as a corporate boss. He leverages authority and guilt to control others, but this power is entirely dependent on the compliance of his victims. When faced with genuine danger or defiance, he is helpless, unable to perform any manual labor or make effective decisions, revealing him to be a deeply incompetent and pitiable individual whose cruelty is a mask for profound weakness.
