Description
Inkarmat is a young Ainu woman who appears as a fortune teller and spiritual medium. Her name carries the meaning of the woman who sees, which reflects her primary role in the story. She has red-tinted brown eyes and dark, shoulder-length reddish hair, which she often covers with a navy blue matanpushi headpiece. A traditional Ainu mouth tattoo adorns her face, and she wears ninkari earrings with red beads. Her clothing consists of a dark red cinciri, a traditional Ainu garment with intricate patterns and long sleeves, paired with leather boots. She also wears a full fox skin around her neck along with a tamasai bead necklace and carries a sash bag on her left side.

Inkarmat possesses a sly and cunning personality, often using people's perceptions against them to achieve her goals. She is assertive and confident, comfortable leveraging both her looks and her reputation for spiritual prowess. Her fortune-telling practice serves as a source of income, and she has been known to swindle people out of their money, using the proceeds for herself and later for those she comes to care about, such as Tanigaki and Cikapasi. Despite these self-serving tendencies, she cares deeply about the fate of the Ainu people and wants to ensure that Asirpa is well taken care of. Her methods may appear outlandish or deceitful, but she has shown fierce loyalty to the few individuals she becomes attached to.

Her most notable ability is a form of divination known as niwok, which allows her to make predictions about past and future events. She uses this skill to win bets, frighten people into purchasing her remedies, and guide her own decisions. She carries a family heirloom, the skull of a white fox called Sirakki Kamuy, and uses its jawbone for fortune-telling. By placing the jawbone on her head and interpreting how it falls, she determines whether an endeavor is likely to succeed or fail. The fox motif surrounds her character, from her foxy expression to the bones she uses, aligning with the trickster archetype.

Inkarmat enters the story when she meets Asirpa during her travels, claiming to know something important about Asirpa and her father. She has a past connection to Wilk, also known as Noppera-bo, having received a gift from him when they parted ways, though her divination told her they would never meet again. Her role becomes more significant during the Abashiri Prison arc, where she is revealed to have been colluding with Lieutenant Tsurumi of the 7th Division, believing that only he can recover Asirpa and Noppera-bo safely. Her motivations regarding the Ainu gold are complex; she tells Tanigaki that the gold has nothing to do with either of them.

Key relationships shape her development throughout the story. She develops a romantic connection with Genjirou Tanigaki, a former soldier of the 7th Division. After he saves her from drowning and protects her from bears, the two begin a relationship. Later, she is stabbed by Kiroranke after exposing his betrayal, and though seriously injured, she deliberately keeps the dagger lodged in her body as evidence to prove who her attacker was, an act that also helps preserve her life. Her relationship with Asirpa is protective in nature, as she wants to ensure the younger girl is safe. She also shares a connection to Kiroranke, whom she accuses of killing Asirpa's real father, though the truth of this claim remains ambiguous given her own secret dealings with Tsurumi.

Over the course of the story, Inkarmat transitions from a mysterious and somewhat untrustworthy figure who uses her spiritual reputation for personal gain to a more loyal companion, particularly to Tanigaki. Her development reveals that while she can be manipulative, her concern for the Ainu people and for Asirpa is genuine. She finds comfort in her fortune-telling practice, often dropping the fox jawbone multiple times to reassure herself about important outcomes.
