Description
Kanae Sumida is a character who appears in the second segment of the narrative, set during the protagonist Takaki Tono's years in high school on the island of Tanegashima. She is a student at the local central high school and a classmate of Takaki after he transfers from Tokyo.

From a young age, Kanae has lived on Tanegashima. In the sixth grade, she found and adopted a brown dog on the seashore, naming it Cub after her sister's motorcycle. Her life took a significant turn when she first met Takaki during his second year of middle school. She developed an immediate and powerful crush on him, and this feeling became a primary motivator in her young life. Determined to stay close to him, she studied intensely to gain admission to the same high school, an endeavor in which she succeeded.

Kanae's physical appearance is distinctive and reflects her active lifestyle. She has short, brown hair cut above her shoulders and brown eyes. Her most notable feature is her tanned skin, a result of spending long hours surfing in the ocean under the sun, which is portrayed as somewhat unusual for a Japanese girl in the 1990s. She has a slender build and, while she can appear as an innocent and slightly shy teenager around Takaki, she conveys a sense of confidence and control when she is on her surfboard.

Her personality is that of a normal, relatable teenage girl who lives very much in the present moment. Unlike Takaki, who is often preoccupied with distant memories and future plans, Kanae is focused on the immediate joys and anxieties of her daily life, which revolve around two passions: surfing and Takaki. She struggles with indecision about her own future after graduation, a source of worry for her family and teachers. Emotionally, she is transparent and finds it difficult to hide her feelings; her face easily betrays her emotions, whether it is blushing in Takaki's presence, smiling from the joy of learning to surf, or crying when she feels heartbroken. This genuineness and her experiences of unrequited love make her a character who is seen as highly empathetic and representative of youthful longing.

Kanae's primary motivation throughout the story is her unspoken love for Takaki. She orchestrates chances to be near him, such as waiting after school for his archery club to end so they can walk home together, often pretending these meetings are coincidental. Despite her strong feelings, she is unable to confess them. She senses that Takaki is always looking at something far away, beyond the horizon, and that his heart belongs to someone else from his past. Her place in the story is to serve as a quiet observer of Takaki during his high school years, offering a perspective on his emotional distance and the painful nature of a love that is not returned. She represents a missed connection and the sadness of a one-sided relationship.

Regarding development, Kanae's key moment of change occurs during a scene where she is about to confess her feelings. As she struggles with her words, a rocket launch from the nearby Tanegashima Space Center takes place. Watching the machine climb into the vast sky, she realizes that Takaki is reaching for something as distant and unreachable as that rocket, a goal she feels she cannot compete with. This realization leads her to swallow her confession, understanding that it would be futile. In a later scene, she is the only one who knows of Takaki's departure for Tokyo, and she watches alone as his plane takes off, marking the final, silent end of her connection to him. In extended material, such as the manga adaptation, it is shown that Kanae eventually becomes a nurse and, years later, musters the courage to travel to Tokyo in search of Takaki, leading to a final, chance encounter with him in a park.

Her notable abilities include surfing, a hobby she learned from her older sister and dedicates significant time to practicing. She is also shown to be capable of significant determination and academic effort, as evidenced by her studying to enter the same high school as Takaki. She rides a motorcycle as a means of transportation on the island.
