Description
Alfred Rainford, a powerful mage specializing in wind magic, lives secluded near Baumeister territory. He once served as court wizard to Duke Bleichroder prior to his demise. Sensing Wendelin von Benno Baumeister's magical potential during a forest incident, Alfred intervenes to save the boy from a wild boar and accepts him as an apprentice.
Alfred subjects Wendelin to rigorous magical training, stressing control and practical wind magic application. He counsels Wendelin to hide his magical abilities from his family to prevent disruption of noble succession plans. During this period, Alfred manifests unsettling symptoms: cold skin, a complete loss of taste, and intermittent physical pain.
These symptoms reveal Alfred's true state: he is a "Whispering Dead," a sentient corpse sustained by magic after perishing on a failed expedition. He returned specifically to find a worthy apprentice to inherit his knowledge and possessions. After years training Wendelin, Alfred confesses his undead nature and requests Wendelin use holy magic to purge his remaining life force, allowing peaceful passage into the afterlife.
Before his final departure, Alfred secures Wendelin's inheritance of his estate and magical resources. He also instructs Wendelin to return his expedition materials and personal effects to Duke Bleichroder, an act that later brings Wendelin significant rewards and recognition from the Duke. Alfred's teachings and sacrifice establish the foundation for Wendelin's future path as both mage and noble.
