Description
Li'l Cactus is an anthropomorphic cactus characterized by shyness, quietness, and deep contemplation, serving as a recorder of adventures. In *Legend of Mana*, it resides in a pot within the protagonist's upstairs bedroom. After hearing recounted adventures, Li'l Cactus rushes to a leaf journal tacked to a pillar to write entries in the Cactus Diaries. These entries reveal a short attention span and juvenile perspective, often simplifying or comically distorting stories with mischievous quips.

Beyond shyness, Li'l Cactus exhibits impish mischief—exemplified by stealing Lisa’s broom and discarding it in the Junkyard while calling it "rubbish"—yet acts without malice. During a quest involving Bud’s illness, Li'l Cactus leaves a note stating "Went to ask Gaia how to make a potion" and embarks on an unseen journey. This adventure includes seeking curative knowledge from Gaia in Luon Highway, consulting Selkie in the Jungle, meeting Brownie at Geo’s Magic University, and obtaining a potion from pirate David aboard the SS Buccaneer. Pelican the mail carrier delivers Li'l Cactus home stuck in a mailbox, triumphant with the medicine. This selfless act highlights concern for others, reflected in Diary Entry 49: "Finally I got to go on an adventure on my own... I feel like I saved the world today. Just feeling like that is enough for me."

The Cactus Diaries function as a recurring mechanic. In *Legend of Mana*, 67 entries document quests like "Niccolo's Business Unusual" or "Teardrop Crystal," summarizing events with humorous inaccuracy. Entry 33 expresses skepticism about the Bejeweled City: "I guess there is a place called the Bejeweled City in this world, but that name sounds flakey. I think my master was making up this story." In *Sword of Mana*, diary functionality reappears within Hot Houses across locations like Vinquette Vicinity or Pickly Desert. Though the protagonist can interact with Li'l Cactus, it remains silent, writing entries only after the protagonist leaves. Entries like "A Meeting" or "Fighting Hydra" distill events into whimsical limericks.

Other appearances include *Trials of Mana*, where Li'l Cactus appears as a collectible in 50 locations; finding every fifth cactus unlocks gameplay benefits like shop discounts or combat boosts. Signposts resembling Li'l Cactus also appear in *Dawn of Mana*. The character’s role in the anime adaptation aligns with established traits, focusing on observational recording and quiet support.
