Description
Griff is a soldier serving in the United Defense Force and a member of J-Squad. He holds the rank of Private. His physical appearance is distinguished by brown hair. On the day of Operation Downfall, Griff is present when Master Sergeant Farell assigns the newly arrived William Cage to J-Squad. Farell places Cage in Griff's care, anticipating that Griff will voice all of the squad's dissatisfaction with the new recruit. Griff subsequently assists Cage in being fitted into a Combat Jacket, the mechanized infantry suit used in battle. During this process, when Cage admits his inexperience with the equipment, Griff responds with a sarcastic analogy about navigating an unfamiliar situation, demonstrating his blunt and cynical demeanor. On the beaches of Normandy, Griff and the rest of J-Squad are killed when a single Mimic emerges from the sand and attacks them.

Within the time loops experienced by Cage, Griff appears in several altered scenarios. In one loop where Cage decides to abandon a plan with Rita Vrataski to reach a dam believed to house the Omega, Griff questions if Cage is intoxicated. During the Battle of the Louvre, Griff and the surviving members of J-Squad, including Skinner and Ford, follow Cage and Vrataski. After their aircraft is attacked and half the squad is killed, the remaining group uses the vehicle's engine power to crash into the Louvre. Inside, their mission is to destroy the Omega with grenades. Griff is badly injured in the fighting but chooses to sacrifice himself alongside Skinner. They detonate Skinner's claymore mine to slow down the advancing Mimics, allowing Cage and Vrataski to proceed. Following a final rewind of time, Griff is seen alive and participating in a training exercise with the rest of J-Squad.

Griff's personality is characterized by a skeptical, cynical, and pragmatic outlook. He is quick to voice his discontent, as shown when he is put in charge of watching over Cage. He also displays a dark, sardonic sense of humor, using a flippant comparison about inexperience to highlight Cage's unpreparedness for combat. Despite his gruff exterior, he is a capable soldier who follows orders and ultimately demonstrates a capacity for self-sacrifice, willingly giving his life to ensure the mission's success. His primary relationships are with his fellow J-Squad members, including Sergeant Farell, Skinner, and Ford. He holds no special regard for Cage initially, viewing him as an unproven liability, but he recognizes the authority of Rita Vrataski, referring to her by her legendary nickname. Griff does not possess any unique or superhuman abilities; his skills are those of a standard frontline soldier of the United Defense Force, proficient in the use of his Combat Jacket and standard infantry weapons. His development is limited by the film's time loop structure, but his willingness to make a sacrificial stand in the Louvre represents a key moment of valor for a character otherwise defined by his cynicism.
