Description
Blanka, originally named Jimmy, is a character who appears in the Street Fighter series. His distinctive appearance is the result of a childhood plane crash in the Amazon rainforest, from which he was the sole survivor. After this accident, he grew up isolated in the wild, an experience that caused his physical mutation, turning his skin green and giving him the feral, beast-like features he is known for. His ability to generate and channel electricity through his body was learned from observing the electric eels in the jungle. For many years, he lived without any memory of his past as a human boy, knowing only the laws of the jungle.
Despite his monstrous and intimidating green appearance, long orange hair, and sharp claws and fangs, Blanka possesses a gentle and peaceful soul. He was raised by animals and developed a deep connection with nature, learning to climb from monkeys and hunt from large cats. His upbringing made him a master of wilderness survival. Although he may appear unintelligent due to his brutish demeanor, he is actually quite capable of learning and communication. Over time, he learned to speak English and other languages, moving beyond the animalistic growls that once characterized his speech. While generally good-natured, he can be somewhat rough in his manners due to his time away from civilization and has a temper that can make him fight like a wild animal when truly enraged. A key motivation for Blanka is his deep love and longing for his mother, Samantha. After being separated from her for so long, the desire to find her, be accepted by her, and ultimately make her proud is a driving force in his life. He also struggles with low self-esteem because of his unusual looks and the fear of being rejected by society.
Blanka's role in the overarching story is often tied to his personal journey of self-discovery and his search for a place where he belongs. He first entered the World Warrior tournament in Street Fighter II, which was a pivotal moment as his mother saw him on television and recognized him by the anklets he still wore, leading to their long-awaited reunion. In Street Fighter IV, he sought to gain the world's respect so that his mother could be proud of him. In later years, he has adapted to living in society, even working as an Amazon tour guide in Street Fighter 6 to support his mother.
Throughout his journey, Blanka has formed significant bonds with other characters. His most important relationship is with Dan Hibiki, whose life he once saved in the jungle. Dan became Blanka's first friend and teacher, helping him learn English and introducing him to the outside world. He is also a loyal friend to the schoolgirl fighter Sakura Kasugano, appreciating her upbeat attitude. His main adversary is the evil dictator M. Bison, the head of the Shadaloo organization, who is often responsible for the chaos in the Street Fighter universe. In some story continuities, particularly the UDON comics, Blanka is depicted as one of Shadaloo's victims, having been captured and experimented on, which further explains his powers and his fear of the organization.
Blanka has shown considerable character development across the series. He evolved from a feral, beast-like creature with no memory of his past into a more articulate and socially integrated individual. While he was once portrayed as a savage fighter, later games emphasize his friendly, if somewhat naive, personality and his desire to be accepted for who he is. He has learned to embrace his unique traits, even capitalizing on his fame by creating and attempting to sell "Blanka-chan" plush dolls of himself, a venture that reflects his adapted, more commercial side.
In combat, Blanka uses a self-taught, animalistic fighting style that relies heavily on his unique physiology. His most famous technique is the Rolling Attack, where he curls his extremely flexible body into a ball and launches himself at his opponent. He can also perform this move in the air, as a Vertical Rolling Attack. His signature defensive and offensive ability is the Electric Thunder, which surrounds his body with a powerful electric current that shocks anyone who comes into contact with him. Other notable abilities include the Ground Shave Roll and the Shout of Earth, a move where he pounds the ground to discharge electricity.
