Description
Edmond Honda, often referred to as E. Honda, is a character who appears in the Street Fighter anime adaptation, playing a significant role in the latter half of the film. As a professional sumo wrestler of high rank, he is a formidable presence, using his immense size and strength in combat. In this animated story, his primary motivation shifts from the video games goal of promoting sumo wrestling to a more direct need for prize money, as he is shown fighting in matches for cash.
Honda is first introduced in Calcutta, where he is engaged in a wrestling match with the stretchy-limbed yogi Dhalsim. During the fight, Dhalsim manages to slip free from Honda's powerful grip and attempts to use his mental powers to subdue the sumo wrestler. However, the arrival of the wandering fighter Ryu distracts Dhalsim, allowing Honda to regain control of the match and win by forfeit. Demonstrating a strong sense of honor and gratitude, Honda recognizes Ryu as a fellow Japanese fighter who inadvertently helped him secure the victory. He approaches Ryu, gives him half of his prize money, and offers him a place to stay, showcasing a friendly and generous personality.
His relationship with Ryu is central to his role in the story, built on mutual respect and national kinship. This bond leads him to become involved in the larger conflict against the sinister Shadaloo organization. When the villainous M. Bison and the American soldier Guile track Ryu to his location, Honda bravely charges forward to take on Bison himself. His direct assault fails when Bison teleports out of the way, and a brainwashed Ken Masters knocks Honda off course, sending him stumbling directly into the boxer Balrog. This begins a fierce fight between the two, which culminates in both of them falling off a nearby cliff. Demonstrating incredible resilience, Honda recovers quickly from the fall. By the time Ryu and Ken defeat Bison, Honda is seen lugging the unconscious bodies of both Balrog and Guile back to the group, proving his immense physical fortitude and his value as a reliable ally.
In terms of abilities, Honda is a master of sumo wrestling, and his fighting style in the anime reflects the fantastical techniques from the games. He is known for his powerful palm strikes and his signature Hundred Hand Slap technique. He also makes use of a leaping, horizontal flying headbutt, a move that defies normal physics and allows him to launch his large body through the air with great force. These abilities make him a powerful and unpredictable fighter, capable of trading blows with the world's strongest warriors. His character remains largely unchanged from his video game counterpart, acting as a proud, strong, and good-hearted fighter whose loyalty makes him a dependable friend in the heat of battle.
