Description
Dan Hibiki is a fictional character from Capcom's Street Fighter fighting game franchise, first appearing in Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dreams in 1995. He was born on November 25th in Hong Kong, standing 177 centimeters tall and weighing 74 kilograms, with blood type O. Dan is consistently portrayed as an arrogant, overconfident, and utterly feeble character, widely considered the comic relief of the series due to his over-the-top poses, battle cries, and subpar-looking moves. He developed his own fighting style called Saikyo-ryu, which translates to the Strongest Style, despite the considerable lack of power in his techniques.
Dan's backstory is driven by revenge. His father, Go Hibiki, was a martial artist who gouged out the right eye of the Muay Thai champion Sagat during a brutal fight. In retaliation, Sagat killed Go. Determined to avenge his father's death, Dan sought training from the legendary master Gouken, the same instructor who trained Ryu and Ken Masters. However, Gouken stopped training Dan once he acknowledged that Dan's motivations were selfish and rooted in vengeance, leading to Dan's expulsion from the dojo. With his incomplete training, Dan combined what he learned from Gouken with elements of Muay Thai and his own inventions to create the Saikyo-ryu style.
Dan's primary motivation throughout the Street Fighter Alpha series is to track down and defeat Sagat to avenge his father. By the events of Street Fighter Alpha 3, Dan believes he has succeeded in this quest, unaware that Sagat actually threw the fight out of pity or guilt, recognizing how consumed Dan was by revenge. After this perceived victory, Dan's motivation shifts to promoting and expanding his Saikyo-ryu school, traveling the globe to recruit students and even offering exercise videos and correspondence courses, though his dojo famously has no members.
In the story, Dan declares himself the mentor of the young fighter Sakura Kasugano, though in truth she merely follows him around hoping to meet Ryu. He is also revealed to be good friends with Blanka, as Blanka saved Dan's life when he was young in the jungle. Dan enters the tournament in Street Fighter IV in an effort to make his Saikyo-style more popular, though he only barely qualifies as a last-minute entry, partly because his phone had been disconnected for not paying the bills. Throughout the series, Dan is portrayed as a character who is oblivious to his own weakness, genuinely believing in his self-proclaimed mastery while consistently being outclassed by more skillful fighters.
Dan's character has developed over the course of the series from a vengeful novice in the Alpha trilogy to a persistently boastful self-proclaimed master in later entries, though his fundamental incompetence and comedic nature remain intact. In some comic adaptations, it is revealed that if angered enough, Dan can tap into the Satsui no Hado, the dark killing intent, and even attempt the Raging Demon technique, though his attempts are typically played for humor, such as tripping over a backpack. By the time of stories adapting the Street Fighter III era, Dan has lost his dojo and works as a chef for E. Honda, though he continues to assist other characters in rescuing allies.
Dan's notable abilities are intentionally comedic and ineffective compared to other fighters. His signature move is the Gadoken, a projectile fireball that has pitifully short range and does mediocre damage, a parody of Ryu's Hadoken which he propels with one hand rather than two. He possesses the Koryuken, a dragon punch with very little horizontal range during which he sometimes flashes white and becomes briefly invincible. His Dankukyaku is a triple-hitting flying kick that is easily blocked. Dan is known for his ability to taunt infinitely, unlike other Street Fighter characters who can only taunt once per round, and he has super taunt techniques called the Chouhatsu Densetsu and Chouhatsu Shinwa. His strongest attacks involve repeated small strikes against his opponent, such as the Hissho Buraiken, which parodies similar desperation moves from other fighting games. Dan also has a move called the Otoko Michi, which parodies Akuma's devastating Raging Demon technique but does minimal damage while leaving Dan with only one percent of his life remaining. Despite his weaknesses, Dan has become a fan favorite due to his humorous design, signature moves, and mannerisms.
