Description
Gorō Horikawa is a supporting character in the 1983 live-action film adaptation of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, which is based on the novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui. In this version of the story, he is a close friend and classmate of the protagonist, Kazuko Yoshiyama, and their mutual friend Kazuo Fukamachi. He is part of their central trio at school, sharing in everyday activities such as cleaning their classroom and walking home together.

Horikawa is portrayed as a typical high school student facing pressures common to that stage of life. His family runs a soy sauce business, and while his parents urge him to pursue a university education, he is shown to be firmly committed to helping with the family enterprise instead, indicating a practical and duty-bound side to his personality. He is also a reliable presence, as seen when he and Fukamachi take the unconscious Kazuko to the nurse's office after an accident in the science laboratory. In a moment of simple kindness, he lends her a handkerchief, an act she later reciprocates by returning it to him.

His role in the narrative is primarily that of an ordinary friend, grounding the story in a recognizable reality. The plot hints at a potential romantic undercurrent in their relationship, as the film explores Kazuko's burgeoning desire to be desired, with Horikawa being the object of this longing. However, the story’s focus shifts dramatically when the mysterious time-traveler, who has taken the form of Fukamachi, inserts himself into Kazuko’s memories. This action inadvertently reshapes her unconscious desires, effectively overriding the emotional traces that had been directing her affections towards Horikawa.

A key element of Horikawa's background is a shared childhood incident with Kazuko. He bears a visible cut on his hand, a scar from an accident in their youth when a mirror fell and cut them both as they played together. This physical mark serves as a tangible link to their shared past and is a detail that helps Kazuko unlock a deeper understanding of the strange events unfolding around her. While he possesses no supernatural abilities, his characterization provides a vital contrast to the time-traveling Fukamachi, representing the ordinary, stable, and nostalgic life that is ultimately set against the film's science fiction premise.
