Description
Makoto Arai is a secret investigator working for Interpol who becomes a key ally to Goro Watari, the hero known as Inazuman, in the second season of the series. His background is marked by tragedy: his wife and young daughter were kidnapped by the Despar Army, the enemy organization that emerges after the defeat of the previous threat. This personal loss drives Arai’s deep-seated grudge against the Despar Army and fuels his determination to see them destroyed. Before joining forces with Goro, Arai had been investigating the Neo-Human Empire Phantom Army, the earlier antagonist group, and through that research he learned about Goro’s existence. When Goro was attacked by the Despar Army shortly after their appearance, Arai rescued him and brought him to a hidden underground base that he had established for his operations.
Arai’s personality is cynical, hardened, and practical, shaped by the loss of his family and the grim nature of his work. He carries himself with a no‑nonsense attitude and is willing to use lethal force, often wielding a shotgun in combat. Despite his gruff exterior, he develops a strong sense of partnership with the younger Goro, and their relationship grows into a genuine friendship built on mutual trust and shared purpose. In the series, Arai serves as the grounded, human counterpart to Goro’s superhuman abilities, providing tactical support, intelligence, and firepower. His own body has been enhanced with cybernetic components, making him a capable fighter even without Goro’s transformative powers.
Throughout the narrative, Arai remains focused on the mission to liberate the enslaved citizens of the Despar Army’s underground city and to rescue his wife and daughter. His development is closely tied to the final confrontation: in the last episode, he finally reunites with his family, bringing a measure of closure to his personal arc. His notable abilities include marksmanship, covert operations, and advanced knowledge of the Despar Army’s tactics, all of which he uses to assist Inazuman in the struggle for justice.
