Description
Genjirō Tanigaki is a former Private First Class of the 7th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army and a Matagi, a traditional hunter from the Tōhoku region. Standing at 185 centimeters with a muscular build, he has short black hair, dark brown eyes, and a thin beard along his jawline. His physical presence is imposing, yet his demeanor undergoes a significant transformation throughout his journey.
Tanigaki initially appears stern, aloof, and rarely smiles. This cold exterior is a direct result of profound personal loss. His sister, Fumi, died under tragic circumstances, and his mother passed away from grief shortly after, events that left him feeling lost and without purpose. However, this hardness is a shield for a deeply caring and honorable man. He possesses a strong sense of righteousness and is driven by a need to repay debts to those who help him. As he integrates with the Ainu people, he becomes more gentle, shy about his own abilities, and deeply protective of his newfound family.
His primary motivation stems from the unresolved tragedy of his sister. Believing his friend and brother-in-law, Kenkichi Aoyama, had murdered her and burned down their house, Tanigaki enlisted in the army specifically to track him down for revenge. This quest consumed him, and even after his mother died of grief over his departure, he continued to pursue Aoyama. The irony of his motivation is that he eventually finds Aoyama on a battlefield during the Russo-Japanese War, not as a target for revenge, but as a mortally wounded soldier. In a pivotal moment, Aoyama reveals that he killed Tanigaki’s sister at her own request because she was dying of a socially alienating disease, and he burned the house to protect the family's honor, exiling himself in the process. Tanigaki, unable to complete his revenge, was left directionless until he found a new purpose in protecting the Ainu community that healed him.
In the story, Tanigaki is first introduced as an antagonist pursuing the main characters for the 7th Division. His role shifts dramatically after he is wounded and taken in by the Ainu elder Huci and a young boy named Osoma, who nurse him back to health. This experience, combined with his time spent with the legendary tattooed convict and hunter Tetsuzō Nihei, awakens his Matagi spirit and causes him to desert the military. He becomes a bridge between the world of the Japanese military and Ainu culture, using his skills to protect his new home. Later, motivated by a desire to protect Asirpa and repay his debt to her family, he allies himself with the main group, even as he maintains complex loyalties.
Key relationships define his arc. His bond with Tetsuzō Nihei is that of a mentor and surrogate father, giving him purpose after losing his family. Huci and Osoma represent the family and community that accept him, leading him to wear Ainu clothing like a matanpushi (headband) as a symbol of his new identity. He develops a deep romantic relationship with Inkarmat, an Ainu fortune teller, whom he eventually marries and has a large family with, including one daughter and fourteen sons. His relationship with his former commander, Lieutenant Tsurumi, remains fraught with tension, as Tanigaki rejects the division's brutality but is later manipulated through threats to Inkarmat's safety.
Tanigaki’s development is a journey from a cold, revenge-driven soldier to a warm, family-oriented protector. He struggles to find his place in the world, feeling alienated from both his Matagi village and the military. Through his adoption of Ainu customs and his commitment to protecting others, he finally discovers a sense of belonging and purpose. He evolves from a man defined by death into a father and a guardian, ultimately leaving the chaotic hunt for gold to build a peaceful life.
His notable abilities stem from his dual upbringing as a Matagi and a soldier. He is an expert marksman with a rifle, capable of shooting targets from great distances. More importantly, his Matagi heritage grants him exceptional skills in hunting, tracking, and surviving in the harsh wilderness, including knowledge of traditional foods like kane mochi (walnut rice cakes). He is highly resourceful and intelligent, able to use his environment to outmaneuver opponents even when wounded and outgunned.
