Description
Kotaro Minami is the main protagonist of the series Kamen Rider Black Sun. Transformed into a Black Locust Kaijin as a child by the implantation of the Kingstone of the Sun, he was designed to be a candidate for the succession of the Creation King alongside his foster brother, Nobuhiko Akizuki, who received the Kingstone of the Moon. Born on the day of a solar eclipse, he was destined for a grim fate within the framework of the Gorgom organization and its political ambitions.
In his youth during the 1970s, Kotaro was part of a revolutionary movement seeking civil rights for Kaijin, but the movement was violently crushed. Following this trauma and the death of a close comrade, Shinigami Yukari, he spent the next fifty years in a state of deep disillusionment and apathy. Living on the fringes of society, he worked as a debt collector and hitman, a weary and exhausted figure who had lost hope for any kind of future. He refused to consume the Heaven substance that would have preserved his youth, choosing instead to age and live with his regrets.
His personality is defined by his weariness and moral complexity. He is a man caught between the monster he was made into and the humanity he struggles to retain. His motivations are reignited by a chance encounter with the young human activist Aoi Izumi. Her idealism forces him to confront his past, his estranged brother, and the corrupt system of the Gorgom party. His purpose shifts from mere survival and self-destruction to a reluctant guardianship of Aoi and a determined mission to dismantle the abusive structure of the Creation King once and for all.
As the main protagonist, Kotaro is the central figure around whom the conflict between Kaijin liberation, human oppression, and the legacy of the 1972 movement revolves. He represents the battered hopefulness of an older generation passing the torch to a new one. His role is that of a reluctant hero, a former revolutionary forced back into the fight who must ultimately choose to sacrifice himself to break the cycle of violence and suffering.
His key relationships define his arc. The most central is with his foster brother, Nobuhiko Akizuki, who becomes Kamen Rider Shadowmoon. Their bond is a tragic mixture of fraternal love and bitter ideological opposition, with Nobuhiko embracing a supremacist ideology after his long imprisonment. Kotaro develops a powerful paternal bond with Aoi Izumi, viewing her as the inheritor of a hope he can no longer grasp for himself. He also carries the defining loss of Shinigami Yukari, a human activist whose betrayal and death shattered the unity of their generation and haunts him still. His interactions with the Gorgom high priests are those of an old ally turned enemy, as they become the establishment he fights against.
Kotaro's development follows a trajectory from suicidal apathy to active, defiant rebellion. He enters the story as a man waiting for the end, but through Aoi's influence and the need to confront Nobuhiko, he rediscovers a sense of purpose. He accepts his destiny not as a ruler, but as an end to a corrupt lineage, culminating in a final, fatal confrontation that seeks to end the suffering of the Kaijin race.
As the bearer of the Kingstone of the Sun, Kotaro can transform into the armoured form of Kamen Rider Black Sun. This form grants him immense superhuman strength, speed, and resilience. His Kaijin nature also provides him with unique physical abilities. The source of his power is directly tied to his will and his acceptance of his own fate. His refusal to sustain himself with Heaven caused him to age naturally, contrasting sharply with the preserved youth of Nobuhiko. In his final battles, he channels all of his power into a final stand against the oppressive systems he was created to serve.
