Description
Bilgenia is a character from the 2022 reboot series Kamen Rider BLACK SUN, serving as a primary antagonist. He is an ancient armored fish kaijin, a type of monster, and a former prominent member of the activist group Gorgom. Among kaijin, he is distinctive for retaining largely human facial features even when transformed, his monster form functioning more like an suit of durable armor that is highly resistant to conventional weaponry. He is consistently depicted as one of the most physically powerful kaijin, possessing strength that rivals or exceeds the protagonists, Kotaro Minami (Black Sun) and Nobuhiko Akizuki (Shadow Moon), before their full awakening as the Century King.

Bilgenia's personality is marked by a deep, fanatical devotion to the Creation King, whom he views as a god to be protected at all costs. In the 1970s, he was a resolute believer in the cause of kaijin liberation, becoming enraged by what he saw as submissive negotiations with the human government. This uncompromising attitude drove him to steal the Creation King and form a splinter faction to keep it from being used by humans. However, after being imprisoned for decades, his idealism curdles into cynicism and cruelty. As the personal enforcer for Prime Minister Shinichi Donami, he becomes a sadistic and bloodthirsty instrument of power. He develops a penchant for torture, finding amusement in the suffering of others, and is highly manipulative, using people's desires against them before discarding them. Despite his viciousness, his core devotion to the Creation King remains his sole consistent principle, and upon learning the shocking truth about its artificial origin, this faith is shattered, leading to a profound crisis of identity.

Within the story, Bilgenia serves as the primary field agent and enforcer for Prime Minister Donami, tasked with retrieving the Kingstone to create a new, powerful Creation King. In the past timeline of 1972, he is a key figure in the Gorgom movement, acting as a guardian and something of an older brother figure to the young Kotaro and Nobuhiko. He carries the Satan Saber, a legendary sword said to protect the king, which he wields as his signature weapon. His most significant and horrific actions occur in the 2022 timeline, where he captures and tortures the parents of the young activist Aoi Izumi. He cruelly forces Aoi's father to transform into a crab monster and, in a scheme to lure her out, forcibly transforms Aoi herself into a mantis kaijin while forcing her mother to watch, before murdering the mother in cold blood.

Bilgenia's relationships are primarily defined by utility and subservience. He is fiercely loyal to the Creation King but serves Prime Minister Donami as his right-hand man, though this is a relationship born of opportunity rather than genuine loyalty. He holds deep resentment towards the Three High Priests of Gorgom, particularly Darom, for their past submissiveness to humans. His interactions with Kotaro and Nobuhiko evolve from a past familial bond to a bitter enmity. His most complex relationship is with Aoi Izumi; he is the architect of her suffering and the murderer of her parents, yet he ultimately sacrifices his life to protect her, entrusting her with the truth and the means to expose the conspiracy.

Bilgenia undergoes a notable development arc, transitioning from a zealous revolutionary to a broken and cruel enforcer, and finally to a tragic, disillusioned figure seeking atonement. For fifty years, his defining trait was unwavering faith in the Creation King. After being imprisoned, he swears allegiance to Shinichi Donami in exchange for freedom, becoming a tool of the very system he once fought against. His awakening comes after he is defeated, cast aside, and learns from a retired professor that the Creation King was not a divine being but a failed government super-soldier experiment. This revelation destroys his life's purpose, leading him to question where he went wrong. In a final act of redemption, he betrays Donami, hands incriminating evidence to Aoi, and dies in a last stand against a police hit squad to ensure she can broadcast the truth to the world. He dies standing, having shattered the Satan Saber with his own hands to use as a final weapon, a symbolic rejection of his old identity.

Notable abilities include his immense physical strength and durability, with his armored monster form being nearly impervious to small arms fire. He is a master swordsman, wielding the Satan Saber with lethal proficiency. His combat skills are such that he can hold his own against the awakened Century King, Kotaro, until he is overpowered and loses an arm. He also demonstrates a degree of authority and knowledge regarding kaijin transformation processes, as he is able to forcibly convert humans into monsters.
