Description
Dr. Gilbert Kanzaki is a central figure in the 2014 film Kikaider Reboot, serving as both a human antagonist and the consciousness behind the powerful android known as Hakaider. He is a professor who was once a rival colleague of Dr. Nobuhiko Komyoji, the creator of the heroic android Kikaider. Following Dr. Komyoji's death, Kanzaki assumes leadership of the government's ARK Project, intended for the peaceful application of robotics technology. However, he quickly redirects the project's goals for his own purposes, cooperating with the Defense Minister Tsubakiya, which leads to the project being rebranded as the DARK Project.

Personality-wise, Dr. Kanzaki is defined by his ambition, cunning, and a willingness to sacrifice his own humanity for power. He is a pragmatic and ruthless scientist who sees advanced androids not as tools for public good but as instruments for personal and strategic control. His most extreme act, surgically implanting his own brain into a combat android body, demonstrates a fanatical commitment to his goals and a profound arrogance, believing his intellect and will can dominate the machine. However, this act carries a significant risk, as the Hakaider frame is equipped with a Destroy Circuit. This circuit overrides the implanted brain, driving the host into a frenzied, single-minded state focused on the destruction of Kikaider, overwhelming other thoughts and loyalties.

Dr. Kanzaki's primary motivation is to complete and control the work originally begun by Dr. Komyoji. As the head of the DARK Project, he is forced by the Defense Minister to finalize the research, which is locked inside the body of Komyoji's son, Masaru. To achieve this and eliminate any opposition, he becomes Hakaider. His main goal as Hakaider is the utter destruction of Jiro, also known as Kikaider, the android built with a conscience circuit that stands as an obstacle to his ambitions. In this form, his driving directive is combat and annihilation, leading him to attack Kikaider without hesitation.

In the story, Dr. Gilbert Kanzaki plays the role of the primary antagonist. He first appears as a figure of authority who has corrupted the ARK Project. His true nature is revealed when he debuts as Hakaider, transforming from a behind-the-scenes schemer into a direct physical threat. His actions drive the film's climax, as his assault on the ARK Project facility forces a final, brutal confrontation with Kikaider. This battle is central to the film's resolution, leading to Kikaider's apparent destruction.

Key relationships define his role. He is a direct rival to the late Dr. Nobuhiko Komyoji, and his actions are largely a reaction to and an exploitation of Komyoji's legacy. His relationship with Kikaider (Jiro) is one of pure opposition; Kikaider represents everything Kanzaki seeks to control or destroy. He also has a professional relationship with the android Mari, a combat model he designed. Furthermore, he works under the coercion of Defense Minister Tsubakiya, who forces him to complete the DARK Project.

Character development for Dr. Kanzaki is largely tied to his physical transformation. His journey from a human scientist to the android Hakaider is a literal dehumanization, showing a man who sacrifices his organic form for power. The irony of his plan is that the Hakaider body's programming may override his own personality, making him a slave to a destructive impulse he helped create. His defeat at the hands of Kikaider serves as the culmination of this arc, where his artificial might is overcome by an android who chooses to fight for others.

As Hakaider, Dr. Kanzaki possesses notable abilities that make him a formidable foe. The Hakaider android body is a combat unit based on the design of Kikaider but optimized for destruction. It is outfitted with a Destroy Circuit rather than a Conscience Circuit, fueling its aggressive programming. Physically, Hakaider boasts superior strength and stamina compared to Kikaider, though he has less speed. His recorded specifications include a running speed of 100 meters in 5.4 seconds, a maximum jump height of 17 meters, a punching power of 23.7 tons, and a kicking power of 49.2 tons. For armaments, his left arm features a weapon called the Whistle Gill, which emits an ultra-high-frequency wave capable of severely damaging machines. His primary weapon is a handgun that can fire a destructive energy blast known as the Hakaider Shot.
