Description
Kyōko Tanaka, who also goes by her stage name Sali, is the protagonist of Sexy Tanaka-san. She is a forty-year-old single woman working in the accounting department of a company. Despite holding a TOEIC score above nine hundred and possessing a certified tax accountant qualification—making her so competent that coworkers call her “the AI of accounting”—she is treated as an eccentric loner. By day, she is plain, shy, and withdrawn, with no friends or romantic history. She lives alone with a pet hamster named Makabe-kun and follows a disciplined morning routine that includes perfect housekeeping and cooking.
Her hidden life begins at night, when she transforms into Sali, a mesmerizing belly dancer at the Persian restaurant Sabalan. She started dancing as a way to change herself, feeling trapped in a monotonous existence. Belly dance gives her a sense of agency and joy, and she dreams of eventually studying dance in Turkey or Egypt and becoming an independent dancer who can draw an audience under her own name. She practices diligently at a dance studio and saves money for that future.
The discovery of her secret by Akari Kurahashi, a younger temporary employee at her company, sparks their unusual friendship. Kyōko is initially terrified of exposure but gradually opens up. She develops a quiet crush on Keito Miyoshi, the easygoing married owner of Sabalan, whose casual compliment “You’re beautiful” encouraged her to pursue dance. Her relationship with the blunt and judgmental Kosuke Shono evolves from hostility to mutual respect after he witnesses her dedication and her articulate defense of belly dancing as a form of self-determination.
Throughout the story, Kyōko’s steadfast commitment to her passion influences those around her. She learns to accept herself and to form bonds outside her solitary routine, moving from a life of isolation to one where she shares her true self with trusted others. Her primary abilities lie in her mastery of belly dance, her financial prudence, and her quiet resilience in the face of societal expectations.
