Description
Akari Kurahashi is a 23-year-old temporary office worker at the Mitsutomo Corporation, where she is a colleague of the older and more reserved Tanaka Kyoko. At the beginning of the story, Akari is presented as a likable and outwardly cheerful young woman who is highly focused on achieving a conventional, stable life. This manifests in a strong motivation to get married, which she pursues with a sense of urgency. Akari believes that her personal value is largely determined by her youth and cuteness, and as she perceives these attributes as temporary, she feels a growing anxiety that her time to find a husband is "running out". This belief drives her to attend numerous matchmaking parties and social mixers, yet these activities leave her feeling empty and lonely rather than fulfilled.
Her role in the story is that of a catalyst and a point of contrast to the protagonist, Tanaka Kyoko. While Tanaka is a plain and seemingly unremarkable woman in her forties who has a secret, passionate life as a belly dancer named Sali, Akari appears to be living the life that society expects of a young woman. However, her internal struggle reveals that this path is not bringing her happiness. The central turning point for Akari occurs when she discovers that her unassuming colleague is the same person as the exotic belly dancer Sali she sees performing at a local restaurant. This revelation deeply impresses her, and she becomes infatuated with and inspired by the inner strength and self-possession that Tanaka-san possesses. Sworn to secrecy about Tanaka-san's double life, Akari becomes one of her biggest fans and begins to question her own life choices.
This relationship is the most significant in Akari's development. Her admiration for Tanaka-san leads her to a profound personal transformation. As she spends more time with and learns from her older colleague, Akari finds herself becoming bored with the superficiality of the marriage-hunting scene and begins to doubt the direction of her own life. She starts to see an alternative to the conventional path she was desperately pursuing. Her development is marked by a shift away from defining her worth through marriage and toward discovering her own sense of self, inspired by Tanaka-san's example of living life on her own terms. In this way, the two polar-opposite women empower each other, with Akari's journey being one of learning to blow off the judgments of others and find her own authentic path. Key relationships in her life include her friends from university, such as Shingo Nakahara, Hana Enomoto, and Sana Negishi, as well as interactions with her coworker Shono Kosuke, which further challenge her values. In terms of notable abilities, while Akari does not possess any extraordinary skills, her primary ability is her capacity for change and self-reflection, as well as her enthusiasm for supporting others, such as when she researches makeup techniques to help Tanaka-san transform for a date.
