Description
Kuromarimo is a former magistrate of the Drum Kingdom who becomes an officer of the Bliking Pirates under the tyrannical King Wapol. A tall man with a distinct, voluminous black afro and matching facial hair, he wears an orange martial robe trimmed in white and boxing gloves styled to mimic his hairdo. His appearance suggests a brawler, and his personality reinforces that image: he is arrogant, self-serving, and unflinchingly obedient to Wapol. Cold pragmatism defines his political outlook. He openly mocks ideas like conscience when they threaten royal authority, laughing at Dalton’s more principled approach to governance.
His motivation is simple and unchanging: maintain his own power by serving Wapol without question. As magistrate, he exercised sweeping control over the island's people, most infamously by rounding up nearly all doctors and confining them to the castle, leaving the population without medical care. When Blackbeard’s attack forces the king to flee, Kuromarimo abandons the kingdom without hesitation, turning to piracy for a year. His sense of loyalty is not to the land or its citizens but to the man who can grant him status, and he harbors an ambition to be next in line for the throne if anything ever happened to Wapol.
After returning to Drum Island, Kuromarimo plays a direct role in terrorizing the inhabitants and pursuing the Straw Hat Pirates. He easily defeats the local watchguards and overpowers a pack of lapahns, ferocious snow-dwelling giant rabbits. In combat he relies on brutish strength and unorthodox hair-based techniques. He can extend spikes from his afro gloves in an attack that attempts to crush a foe, and he can hurl static-charged afro balls that stick to opponents, setting them up for coordinated fire attacks with his colleague Chess. He also employs a snow camouflage technique, concealing himself beneath the snow to ambush enemies alongside Chess.
Kuromarimo’s closest working relationship is with Chess, another subordinate of Wapol. The two share a seamless rapport, fighting in tandem and enabling each other’s abilities. When the tide turns against them, Wapol uses his Devil Fruit power to fuse them into the combined being Chessmarimo, demonstrating Kuromarimo’s willingness to forfeit his own identity in service of the king. His attitude toward Dalton, a former royal guard turned rebel, is marginally less hostile than Chess’s; he once visited Dalton in prison, offering a chance to apologize to Wapol and inflicting only minor mistreatment in the process. Still, he ultimately fights Dalton brutally when the rebellion gains momentum.
Throughout the Drum Island arc, Kuromarimo remains a static figure, showing no moral awakening. After the fused form Chessmarimo is defeated by Tony Tony Chopper, Kuromarimo is eventually separated. He later resurfaces in the Evil Black Drum Kingdom, still serving Wapol. His role is that of an enforcer who never questions orders, driven by personal advancement and a deep-seated, arrogant self-interest. His abilities, while peculiar, make him a dangerous close-range fighter who supplements raw physical power with static-charged projectiles and surprise tactics.
