Description
Sir Crocodile, also known by his Baroque Works codename Mr. 0 and the title Desert King, is a major antagonist in the story. A tall, imposing man with a prominent scar across his face, slicked-back black hair, and a fondness for large cigars, he cuts a distinctive figure. His most notable physical feature is the large golden hook that replaces his left hand, which conceals a deadly, poison-coated spike. As a former member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, he once held a government-sanctioned position as a pirate hunter before being stripped of the title following his defeat.

Crocodile is a master strategist who is cunning, patient, and profoundly arrogant. He holds a cynical worldview, believing that the ideals of the Pirate King are meaningless and that only military might and power truly matter. He is ruthlessly pragmatic, viewing everyone around him as tools to be discarded once they have outlived their usefulness. This mistrust extends to all his subordinates; he deliberately kept his identity as the leader of the secret criminal organization Baroque Works hidden from most of its agents. Despite this cruelty, he possesses a calm, almost laid-back demeanor, speaking in a deep, measured tone and laughing distinctively. His arrogance is a notable flaw, as he initially underestimates the determination of Monkey D. Luffy, a mistake that ultimately leads to his downfall.

Crocodile's primary motivation is power. In his youth, he rose through the ranks of piracy quickly, earning a bounty of 81 million Berries before even joining the Warlords. However, his ambitions were shattered when he challenged the legendary Emperor Whitebeard and suffered a crushing defeat. This humiliation led him to believe that relying on personal strength alone was insufficient. Consequently, he orchestrated a complex, multi-year plot to take over the desert kingdom of Alabasta. His goal was to uncover the location of an ancient super-weapon named Pluton, which he intended to use to establish a powerful nation and ultimately become a true power in the world.

As the mastermind of the Alabasta civil war, Crocodile serves as the main antagonist of the Alabasta Saga. He used the banned substance known as Dance Powder to create a drought, framing the benevolent King Cobra and manipulating the populace into a bloody revolution. Operating behind the scenes as the hero who "protected" the kingdom from pirates, he nearly succeeded in his plan. His role in the story shifts dramatically after his defeat and imprisonment in the underwater prison Impel Down. When Luffy breaks into the prison to rescue his brother, he is forced to release Crocodile, leading to a tense and unpredictable alliance. During the subsequent Summit War of Marineford, Crocodile fights against the World Government, directly attacking Whitebeard and later saving Luffy and Jinbe from Admiral Akainu. He claims his actions are not for his allies but simply because he dislikes seeing the Marines be victorious.

Key relationships define his journey. He viewed his former partner, Nico Robin (Miss All Sunday), solely as a tool to decipher the ancient Poneglyphs, and he attempted to kill her when she refused to cooperate. His dynamic with Luffy is one of deep enmity mixed with a grudging respect, as Luffy was the first person to ever truly break his will and defeat him in combat. He shares a bond of loyalty with his former assassin, Daz Bones (Mr. 1), who remains by his side even after their fall from power. Following the timeskip, Crocodile has re-emerged as a major power in the New World as a co-founder of the Cross Guild, an organization that flips the bounty system by putting prices on the heads of Marines. While the clown-like Buggy is publicly the Guild's figurehead, Crocodile holds the real authority as one of its top executives.

Crocodile's development is significant; he transforms from a purely villainous schemer into a complex anti-hero. After losing his Warlord privileges and being imprisoned, he rekindles his ambition and decides to return to the New World, having healed from his past trauma regarding Whitebeard. His notable abilities are formidable. He is the user of the Logia-type Sand-Sand Fruit, which allows him to create, control, and transform his body into sand. He can absorb all moisture from anything he touches with his right hand, turning living beings into mummies and the ground into desert. This power makes him nearly invincible in arid environments. He is also highly proficient in hand-to-hand combat, utilizing his poisoned hook as a deadly weapon. Later official sources confirm he possesses both Armament and Observation Haki, solidifying his status as a top-tier fighter capable of clashing with the world's strongest pirates and admirals.
